We ate at Cracker Barrel in Maryville this weekend.. It's the standard pretty meal but we were hoping to find some good quality family owned southern food options here. Can anyone suggest some non-chain alternatives?

We ate at this Cracker Barrel tonight too. Yawn. Try RJ's Courtyard up near Pellissippi and Alcoa Hwy. Aubrey's always has good quality food and it is a local chain.

Try Big Fatty's-it's my husband and his friends go-to for brunch/breakfast the morning after UT games

We (two adults, two kids) ate at 'Peros on the Hill' while visiting K'ville from Indiana a few weeks ago. Absolutely delicious food w/generous portions & friendly, attentive service!! Would've been happy w/any of the seating options... from the beautiful outdoor terrace to the bar & table seating area w/TVs to the front area w/quiet ambience (incidentally, we sat in the front area). Something for everyone on the menu & very reasonably priced also! Love that it is family owned/operated... and the owner/chef even came to our table to check on our meals & experience. We always enjoy trying new places when in town, though do have our favorites. Add this one to that list - we'll definitely be back when in Knoxville again!! Which is hopefully not too long...

OK folks, Zoe's was amazing! My boyfriend and I ate there last night. I had roasted veggies and spinach rolls. He had potato salad and a pimento cheese sandwich. We both thought it was very delicious. We'll be going back for sure. The food is light and portions aren't huge, but aren't skimpy either. It's one of those places you can leave full without being bloated and/or sick. We hate that. I suggest giving Zoe's a try!

OK, I know this is about dinner options but I just have to share our experience from this past Friday. My husband and I have a standing lunch date on Friday's, since we carpool to Knoxville. He had never been to the Lunch House for lunch, so we went there.

When you walk in you are always greeted by friendly folk and the place is packed. We moved to the back to find a table and sat next to a group of teachers who were preparing to go back to school. They were a great bunch to sit by! Our waitress was attentive and very friendly. We ordered the lunch special of turkey and dressing, with mashed potatoes and gravy. I had fried okra, hubby had cottage cheese. All I can say is AMAZING!!!! The food is, and always has been, delicious! The prices are great for the amount you get. If you leave this place hungry then there's something wrong with you! LOL!!!

I know they are only open for breakfast and lunch, but if you are ever in the area, you must stop by. They are open on Saturday and Sunday.

The place might not look like a 5 star restaurant but the food, service and atmosphere is one of a kind!!

We did try Calhoun's on the River about 2 weeks ago. Sat outside. Food was great, had the pulled pork, beer was cold (I cannot ever pass up a cold glass of Helle's) and service was good. I really like this place!

Is the Calhoun's on the River menu the same as the ones in town?

Hi! I don't know about Knoxville locations, but the Calhoun's in Pigeon Forge has a different menu. I'm sure alot of it has to do with the fact that liquor by the drink is not served in Pigeon Forge.
I've been to both, the Calhoun's on the River is better, imho.

I almost forgot about Puelo's Grille, at exit 398. We LOVE that place!

Food is always great, wonderful service, nice atmosphere. Very reasonable priced.

We went on our anniversary 2 weeks ago; I had the strip steak, it was cooked to perfection. My husband had the fried shrimp, the breading was so light, and there were alot of shrimp on the plate! We were/are a bit disapointed that they did away with their "combo" menu option. I'm sure it was expensive for them, but nonetheless, their food and service is still excellent. It's nice to go to a place where you see the same servers, still friendly as ever, and they are happy to help you.

I've only been to the Straw Plains one though, I cannot speak for the other locations. We always take family there when they are in town visiting; never had a bad meal or service yet!

Thanks. I think we'll try Calhoun's on the River soon. I'd forgotten it exists and it's not all that far from us.
duh

I haven't come across all that many good places to eat that have a view.
