Hey y'all! My gf and I are looking into Knoxville area as I'm looking to go to UT. We live in Lexington, Kentucky currently and have lived in Indianapolis for a year as well. We aren't too fond of Lexington at all. There is plenty of cliqueness and arrogance as well as way too much blue and white. We did enjoy Indy but we're both from small towns in Indiana like 2000-3000. Is there somewhere in or within a 15 minute drive of town tbat we would like?

I'm from a very small rural town in the Northeast. I live in Knoxville and to me it has the feeling of a overgrown town. I love it here, Knoxville has many different areas, only you can know what will be a fit for you .
All the best in your search,
Pam

Thanks Pam! I realized that my post was a little vague. I need to do a little more research and see what areas would be right for us. Although it's not like we wouldn't enjoy being in town. We just didn't make a good choice in Lexington or where we live in Lexington. Thanks for the response!

Just out of curiosity, would anybody know what 1 bedrooms are going for? Our max budget would be 550 but thats if some of the amenities are taken care of. Here in Kentucky we pay for everything. At my other apartments, they took care of the water.

The best way to see what prices are like in different areas of town would be to join Apartments .com, your search criteria will pull up different places and you can see what is offered with the rents.

Most but not all of the complexes pay for water and sewer, along with trash pick up. The city covers for trash pick up for converted houses.

Are you looking for a complex or converted house? Describe your ideal neighborhood.

Either one is ok. we're in our mid to late 20's so somewhere a little more laid back. We both have aleady had our days of partying. Somewhere that allows pets for our 2 small dogs is a must. Given our choice we'd prefer living on the outskirts of town or even a little outside of town but still being 25 minutes or so within campus for me. Ultimately it comes down to staying within budget and being in a good area. We'd both would be transferring our retail jobs but that can be dicey sometimes.

I suggest to look at Knoxville Apartment Guide. Here's the link....

It's how we found our apartment.

kt - I get what you are saying about Lexington (my brother went to school there for a year). Knoxville is a bit different, but it's probably going to feel a lot more similar to Lexington than it is to Indy. They have blue and white (yuck), we have orange and white (damn right). And while Knoxville is the center of the UT universe, it's not quite as cultish as UK is with their basketball. Hopefully the similarities are not the ones you are trying to escape in Lexington.

Knoxville (the city) is smaller on paper than Lexington (the city), but the surrounding areas make Knoxville feel noticeably bigger. I sort of agree with Pam & Bill that Knoxville has an "overgrown town" feel to it, but with the benefits and amenities of a medium sized city.

As for where to live, when I attended UT, I lived within walking distance of campus (Fort Sanders) and loved it. It's a neighborhood stuffed with about 6-8,000 college kids. But if you're looking for laid back, that's probably not going to be your cup of tea.

Most commuter students (that were not native Knoxvillians) seemed to live in West or South Knoxville. West Knoxville is nice, for the most part, but might strain your budget. South Knoxville...I don't have anything nice to say about.

I would take a serious look at the northern area, beyond the 640 bypass.

I agree about the North Knoxville area above I-640. Its cheaper than West Knoxville. I was going to suggest it earlier but Im so partial to West Knoxville I couldnt bring myself to do it. :-)

They can find what they want in West Knoxville for that price as well, though.
