Suntempler, I am sure that there are some local folks who will be able to help you find other German families to socialize with in Knoxville.

I have not yet relocated, so I cannot help you directly. Once everyone is up and about I am sure you will get some direction. This is a very friendly concerned group of people and you are looking in the right place.

If there are no German families, you might want to join some local interest groups to meet others, have a neighborhood get-together to meet others in your area, take a class at UT, start a kids' play date in your neighborhood, check at the local school, library, YMCA for any after school or preschool activities you and your children can get involved in. You may want to sign up for craft or sewing classes at a local craft store (A.C. Moore and Joann's come to mind.) or if you are a spiritual person find a local church to attend; you will meet many people there.

It isn't easy to make new friends when you move into a new area and is more complicated if you have a culture and language change also. But, there are plenty of friendly kind folks in Knoxville who are also looking for friends and you will be sure to find some.

I hope that you acclimate to your new area and enjoy living in the Knoxville area. Try to get involved and reach out to others for assistance. Best of everything. Please keep us informed on your progress.

Knoxville has "German Saturday School" held at Sacred Heart Cathedral (865-694-3765) Maybe they will have an outlet for you. Contact them and ask what organizations they deal with. Also contact the language dept. at UT and ask them who they could put you in contact with.

Thanks, toupsee! See, I knew somebody would know something for you, Suntempler!

I am German/American, too, and wanted to help, but am almost 200 miles away at this point! Gotta sell this house!!

Well, my name is Heidi, but I don't think there is a thing resembling German around here.

Siemens has a big operation here. They are located off of Pellissippi. (and I am sure that you know that they are based out of Germany) Many of their employees are from around here, but plenty of them are here from Germany.

Also, have you been to the German restaurant, Restaurant Linderhof? it is in Farragut. I have never been there but remember reading about it in the Knoxville magazine. They might be an outlet as well.

Good luck to you!

Thumbs up German Clubs through Cazoo.org

I found 4 German Clubs in the general area, in case anyone else besides Suntempler is interested.

From the information given on the website they seem to be quite active and very family oriented. I hope that this gives Suntempler and her family a nice outlet to meet other German speaking friends.

About 45 minutes away in Morristown there is Mahle, owned by the Mahle family from Germany. You might want to connect with them. Hope this helps! I also just found out that I am of German descent.
