We are digging our garden, and keep on hitting rocks that look like marble. We've washed them off and they are beautiful. Is this normal?

Egads, you can start your own quarry and retire!

Does the marble look like it's already been cut and polished? Do you suppose maybe a long time ago when the house was first built they had a patio behind the house which was neglected and eventually gave in to the elements? Or maybe they had some decorative marble in a back yard garden which got buried in mud?

That happened to me at my house in Memphis, although it was just plain dumb bricks instead of marble.

It looks like marble rocks, I guess. It doesn't look like slabs. But it is very pretty. All of the original window sills, the ones that are not part of the family room, but every single window, has Tennessee marble window sills.

I will take a picture of the pretty rocks that I am finding. It seems to be part of the original driveway location, so maybe they cut the sills there? This is where we are planting the perennial garden.

We are now in the back tilling the vegetable garden. I think we found it there, too, but I am not sure.

I'll get back to you.

Rocks in the back look exactly like the ones on the side. I think they are just Tennessee rock. White and orange with a bit of a vein. I've just never seen it before. Some of the ends look shiny, but not much of them.

I am guessing that this is normal rock for the area, right?

It does sound like marble or quartz, Hik. Post a picture; someone will be able to identify them, I'm sure. You know this group.

We had a neighbor when I was young whose house was stuccoed. While the stucco was still soft, the installers put bits of colored glass and small gemstones about the size of M&Ms (looked like gemstones to a 7 yr. old - me) in the wet stucco about every 3 or 4 inches apart. It looked like someone through sparkling confetti all over the house.

I loved it. It was like a glamorous palace to a child. We used to use our fingernails to pry out pretty pieces of red, blue and gold nuggets for our treasures.

Are you planning on doing any stucco, Hik? I have an idea!!

Smile Our own encyclopedia comes to the rescue!

Thanks, Tinman. We can always count on you to show us the goods!

That marble is all beautiful. It very well may be marble in Hik's yard considering it is soft and probably easily breaks and crumbles into stones and pebbles.

Yes! I love Tinman's links!

I am sure that this is just Tennessee rocks. If so, they are beautiful. I'll try to take pictures.
