My son's girlfriend would like to pursue a career as a medical examiner and I was hoping for some input on Maryville college for this field? I know it is an excellent school and am hoping to persuade the both of them to go there so they will be closer to us...but I need to know if it is a good choice for this field. My son graduates next year from High School and his girlfriend is a year behind him, but she is doubling up so she can graduate with him. She was seriously talking about joining the military to be a front line medic but of course we are concerned for her safety as parents and would like to give her other options. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the military; we are actually a retired military family. We are just hoping to give the kids options, they want to "help so many" but there are plenty they can help right here. I was trying to show them there is just as great a need here from the military personnel whom returned from war.

I am hoping to find a college that she could pursue her career choice and see she can do as much good here helping the vets as she would do on the front line.

Thanks for any and all help/advice.

I understand your concerns but think she needs to research what the very different careers entail and how expensive it might be to get there as well as how dangerous/not dangerous they are.

A medical examiner requires a medical (MD) degree and is usually a pathologist. Maryville College has a premed program but I can't tell you how good/bad and how easily it leads to acceptance at medical schools. Here's the basic steps to becoming a Medical Examiner: Steps to Becoming a Medical Examiner in the U.S. A medic in the military is not in anyway related outside of both being under the medical care umbrella. Generally a medic is a nurse, physician assistant or doctor. (see a first person description of the job at the bottom of this page: https://forums.goarmy.com/thread/220962 )

If she is interested in forensics but does not want to go through medical school another UT Knoxville has a very well known Forensic Anthropology Center that she might want to check out. Note from the following links that she may still require a PhD eventually to be in the field. UT Knoxville | Forensic Anthropology Center and this: UT Knoxville | Forensic Anthropology Center | Become a Forensic Anthropologist

I hope this points you in the right direction in giving her some things to think about to make an informed decision on her future.

Forensics? There is only one choice that I would consider: The University of Tennessee. This is a well known, well revered program.

I am a graduate of Maryville College (class of 2004), and I was extremely happy with my college experience! It is a wonderful school! My field is education, but one of my roommates went through the science program (I can't remember her exact major right now...) and became a forensic examiner for the TBI. She has done evidence processing for several years now and loves her work. She feels that Maryville did a great job of preparing her. There are several excellent professors in the various science departments. I think if she likes the school overall, it would be a great place for her!

Thanks for the info all, I will share it with the kids! We are not sure what they will actually decide to major in but I like to have options for them to consider

Your advice is greatly appreciated.
