Any comments? Just curious, because I had heard a lot of good things about the 4th and Gill neighborhood.

I've said it many times, including in the past couple of weeks.

Fourth and Gill has been an up-and-coming neighborhood for many, many years. It just never quite gets there because of the homeless services in the area. It produces many, many problems, including prostitutes, which is something that I have mentioned over and over on this forum. So have a few others.

I'm on a list-serv for that area and read the problems that they face every single day. There have even been instances where women working in their yards are propositioned.

I'd live there in a heartbeat, but because of this, I won't do it.

Agreed. I've said similar things about 4th & Gill, too, in the last couple of weeks on this very forum. I love visiting the neighborhood but would never ever consider living there at this point. I'm too chicken to be an urban pioneer.

On the other hand, I live just east of Broadway right abut where the map starts to fade and LOVE my neighborhood.

Very eye-opening article into the "life of Jennifer." Unfortunately, since prostitution is the world's oldest profession, I think any medium/large city will find much of the same problems in the older downtown areas. Gives background to why many people call that stretch "Scagnolia."

Oh! I never heard it called that.

Knoxville is a nothing compared to other cities when it comes to prostitution and everything else. In some fairly small towns in Florida, if you pull into the wrong neighborhood, drug dealers come running up to your car hoping you are a customer.

Never even thought to look up where the homeless shelters are. Are there any other shelters around town or halfway houses that you all know of?

FWIW, I'd like to point out that none of the red lines on the map are in the 4th & Gill neighborhood. Where I resided for 7 years in the 90's and not once had anyone solicit me.

Yeah sure when I'm over doing repairs on fifth I've had a few guys give me the hairy eyeball but I've perfected my glare and they drive on past.

I guess you all are just more speshul and delicate than I.

Then you can tell the people that live in Fourth and Gill and are on the listserv, and complained about the prostitution and the eyeballing, that they are special. I'm sure that would make them very happy.

There are a lot of good people who live in the old 'hood because they love the old houses and sense of community, but there has been a snooty element move in, I guess that's what I'm reacting to.

I also realized I spent a lot of time trying to give helpful advice to the OP, who most likely would look down his nose at me if he saw me on the street, 'cause I'm not upscale and well dressed enough for him. Gonna have to quit doing that.

Oh, I wouldn't worry about that.

Anyone that wants to live in a safe neighborhood with an upscale grocery store, possibly near a river or lake but under $100,000 couldn't possibly looking down their nose at anyone.
