Hello everyone,

We are getting ready to move out to Knoxville in July, which we are very excited about . I was told the job I am seeking will pay around $18/hr. I need to know if I will be able to support my family of three . What end of the scale is this wage considered in Knoxville? Thank you in advance to your response.

My initial reaction is to say good, because we have a very low cost of living, especially regarding housing, taxes, electrical, and insurance, to name a few.

Of course, that is a major generality. Everyone's mileage can vary. But it is very safe to say that our cost of living is much lower than Portland's.

Welcome to Knoxville!

Electric is cheap. We have the Tennessee Valley Authority. The TVA. It's a federal electric supplier. It's about impossible to compare bills because we all have different lifestyles, stuff and homes, but my bill is a quarter of my mother's in Mass. And our bill is lower than what we had in Florida.

I recently read an excellent article where they compared heating costs in parts of the country and we were the lowest, I am pretty sure. If not, we were really low. But I think we were the lowest.

Cable is the same no matter where you live.

And our car insurance dropped like a rock when we moved from Florida. Not the same thing, though.

Please share what you find out.

OP: Hopefully you are not the only income earner in the household?

A lot depends on your expectations and expenses.

Depends... have you already gotten the job or are you just hoping to get it? NEVER move, in this economy, without having a job first.
Your lifestyle will have a large impact on whether or not you can support your family on that amount. Tell us more about you, please.
