There are actually lots of people in the same financial situation as me, but I am one of the only ones who will admit it. I am not in any way struggling though. I spent over $100 at the bar last night without even blinking.

Through my travels, the majority of people I have met that were genuinely happy were fairly poor. Some people spend their entire lives believing that money is the path to happiness only to find that they have ignored the most important aspects of life and are now miserable.

I know it has become very chic these days to talk about frugality, and I have a lot of respect for people like LVD who has repeatedly demonstrated that having money is not a requirement for being a decent human being (here it comes) but.... as a resident of NYC and a teacher, as is my wife, we have no choice but to run that hamster wheel.

Our dream is to be able to move to a place like Las Vegas and live a much simpler life. We fell in love with this city after visiting for the first time last year. However, as renters with one vehicle and no children, we work for our pensions. This year we paid over $25,000 in taxes!!!!!
We save for our futures and so we can escape for 2 months during the summer and head out west so we can feel like human beings for a short while.

We read a lot of complaints about life in Las Vegas on this forum, and we totally understand that there are some hard times going on now. But people have to appreciate that you can be out of the city in ten minutes and be surrounded by the natural beauty of the desert. It takes almost an hour to get out of NYC before you see anything resembling nature.

It's amazing how a place like Las Vegas that is built on the idea of financial excess can also be such a great example of how much a simple life has to offer.

Having money is nice, but it sure does not guarantee happiness!!!

Just my two cents

Someone needs to remind this fool blogger that he could be writing about almost any big city in this country and especially about Wall Street that is teetering on its crumbling foundation. The difference is that a LOT of people WANT to be able to go to las Vegas and as soon as they have the money they WILL. It's going to be a long time before anyone trusts Wall Street and banks!

I guess I could do it if I had too, but it would take some getting use to. The interesting part is how all of them don't make a lot, but don't struggle either. And, they are happy.

It is simple. My 2 friends I grew up with back in Arizona are pulling in $60,000 to 80,000 a year, when I only make $20,000. I kid you not that I have a lot more spendable cash at the end of month than either of them. It is all about cutting expenses. For example, I chickened out on buying the Mustang I posted earlier. I did screw up my Ebay account, but I realized I was going against my own common sense in trying to fit in with everyone else by buying it. My car insurance was going to triple. It got half the gas mileage of my Escort. It was also going to cost much more to maintain. Since I only drive 100 miles a week at most it was a total waste of money. However, my main way of cutting expenses is to piggyback off of other people on housing costs. I can rent a room off of someone and never have to worry varying costs each month. I also get a much better deal as I am never in a lease as in with an apartment, nor do I have to have multiple utility bills each month. For example, I am paying $400 a month where I am at, and the AC is set at 75, digital cable with DVR and internet are included, I have my own private covered parking space and I live in a gated community. The $400 I pay monthly covers EVERYTHING. Try doing this on your own dime. My roommate is awesome and I really do not like to live alone ( I get lonely), so it works out great (my current situation is not unique, Davie89 even pays $100 less than me for a similar situation). I still have way over $500 a month left over at the end of each month after all my bills, including going out on the weekend. Another thing with me is I never was career driven. I have always pursued jobs that were easy that required no effort or stress. Both of my successful friends have stressful jobs that they hate. My job consists of nothing but sitting on the internet and cooking in the kitchen. Work is like my second home. A lot of people have stressful jobs that pay very well, but are they really happy is what I need to ask? I have everything I need. I have a nice place, high end electronics, a reliable car and good friends who have always been there for me. Really, what more do I need?

Wow, you mean there are actually bars in this town that charge you for drinks? Seriously, I do most of my drinking in casinos so its possible to drink all day and night for free (in a manner of speaking). In fact, yesterday morning my wife and I went to the Aria sports book to watch the USA-England match and ended up drinking about 8 bloody mary's during the course of the match, all free of charge.

BTW, on a side note, I just absolutely love Aria's sports book. It has been my venue of choice in this town for watching any sporting event. Many sports books are either small and cramped, or they have individual chair/desk set-ups making it difficult for groups to sit together. Aria, on the other hand, is more like a regular sports bar. Wide open space with comfortable chairs, couches, and ottomans. It's great for watching sporting events in an atmosphere that can rival being in a stadium itself.

Not to mention the free drinks!

Wow thats a tuff article with mostly harsh comments...Vegas will survive but who knows if or when it will ever be like the boom years again...Not only in Vegas but everywhere. Maybe its just too big to support itself anyhow and needs to get smaller. Even the residents say there are too many residents!
