LAS VEGAS (AP) -- An international study says Las Vegas has one of the worst economies in the world, and prospects for a rapid recovery appear dim.
The Brookings Institution and London School of Economics study ranked Las Vegas fifth from the bottom in a ranking of 150 metropolitan areas, citing a limited economy that relies heavily on tourism and construction.
Las Vegas fared better than only Dublin; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Barcelona, Spain; and Thessaloniki, Greece. The rankings weigh jobs, job growth and income.

Actually it says no such thing.

What it does say is that Las Vegas has been hit very hard by the recession...far harder than many places driven mainly by the housing situation.

It also says little about the future. It does suggest Las Vegas cannot restore its growth industry. I suspect that may be a good thing. It does not however point out that absent the residental construction industry LV is not in bad shape.

Note the spaghetti bowl has again become a nuisance in the AM. A sure sign of the onset of recovery.

Obviously they have never been to Buffalo, NY. Wait until the census stats come out and everyone sees how many people, including myself, have left that crap hole. Pack of smokes $11.15, property taxes on a house valued at $85K = $6,500/year, average salary - $41K <<<Yeah right, my brother has been w/ the same company for 8 years now and still makes under $35K.

I actually have more money in my pocket living in Las Vegas than I ever did living in Buffalo, NY...and it is not from gambling winnings.

Don't forget the outrageous (and rising) state of NY income tax as opposed to zero state income tax in NV. That can add up to another 10% (or so) and more like 12.5-13% if you live in NYC.

It also could mean that people are getting the frack out of Las Vegas. This could be a good thing.

Agreeing with hockeygirl - there's no way our long term outlook is worse than Buffalo or Cleveland or Detroit.

Nope. Local rush hour congestion spot.

We will see the end of this month what really has happened over the last years.

I would have though we would have had a bigger exodus than appears to have occurred.
