Ever creative, California redefined milk according the percentage of milk solids and the way they were measured. By doing so, a dairy makes milk formulated explicitly for the California market. Out of state dairies can do that- or just sell 49-state-legal milk. Few out of state dairies find it profitable to do so... so in effect the only dairies who sell milk in California are -- you got it -- in-state dairies enforcing a sort-of monopoly.

So when you pay more for milk in California, thank your state legislature.

My car insurance went way up. I plan to do some shopping for cheaper rates before I renew again. I have a paid for car and a perfect driving record. Never even had a ticket. I carry just a tad more insurance than I 'have' to and I'm paying @ $800 per year.

Ridiculous!

Yes we complain about traffic, tourists, drunks, etc. But driving here is no worse than it was in Minneapolis where I was before. And the horrendous driving conditions in Winter made it much more likely to have an accident than anything I've seen here.

I honestly believe we are paying too much.

People need to quit generalizing - your personal experience is neither definitive, nor representative. So don't draw conclusions from it. It's just a single data-point. If you want to generalize, look up some stats (as Olecapt did), and figure out which ones you can trust by scrutinizing the data-sources and statistical methods used.
i had state farm in la, as well as here. the cost to insure 2 vehicles in 2011 is what i was paying to insure 1 vehicle in 2008.

if the price of auto insurance is going to determine whether or not you can make it work here... you probably can't make it work to begin with.

I don't carry collision. The car is paid for and if it was totaled I wouldn't collect enough money to even buy the equivalent of what I have.

And yes, diesel is a different animal. The car just turned 200K and with proper maintenance she should go another 200K. You are right about the parts. They are very expensive.

Wow that's unbelievable, haha, I should have figured that it came down to something stupid the CA government did, when doesn't it?! Unbelievable.

As for car insurance, I carry a high liability policy something like $1 million liability besides the standard insurance, so mine always runs more. I think I'm paying probably $200/month I have to see what it is on renewal though.

Actually the vw diesels hold up well mechanically and resale. You have to watch for cracks in the motor mounts. That engine is very very expensive used
