Hi, I will be relocating to Vegas from Chicago in a few months due to my job. It looks like my future company is located in Spring Valley, which is not too far from the strip right? I have 2 kids ages, 10 and 6, (2nd & 5th grades) and will most likely be renting for the first year. What are the best family neighborhoods for us to be looking into which are not too far from Spring Valley and are not Ghost towns? And what are any important facts I should know about in regards to being a resident of this city? Any info would help us since we have only been to the strip once before and do not know the city outside of that. Thanks guys.

I don't think anything in Spring Valley is a ghost town. It is close in enough to be finished, but far enough out to not have been evacuated. You have a lot of family friendly options. Much of Spring Valley is nice, Summerlin is NW, Mountain's Edge and Southern Highlands are south. All are 10-15 minutes away.

There is a lot of information about the city generally here on the forum already. Spend some time reading, and use the search function if there is something specific you want to look into further. Then, if you still have specific questions, ask away!

Spring Valley is an unincorporated town in Clark County, Nevada, located two miles (3 km) west of the Las Vegas Strip.

When you get down to it, any of the neighborhoods in western Las Vegas or Henderson are close enough to Spring Valley that the commute will be short and simple.

Further than that, how can we possibly recommend an area?

We don't know:

1) How much you want to spend on a house. That will have the greatest bearing on what sorts of neighborhoods we're going to recommend.

2) What kind of students your kids are. Are they Ivy League/Med School bound? Average? Special needs?

3) What sorts of things you want in a neighborhood? Don't say "safe with good schools." Safe is assumed. Nobody comes here asking for the most bad-ass part of Las Vegas. And, unfortunately, our schools aren't very good, no matter what yardstick you care to use. So while some schools are better than others, we don't have a Lake Forest HS here. So, what's important to you? View? Golf? Lot size? Access to the strip? Access to the airport? Access to parks/hiking?
