We have the same issue in my development in Centennial Hills. My community isn't gated, but there are clearly posted "No Soliciting" signs at both entrances. They make no difference. I have been disturbed by political campaigners, people selling security systems, people hawking the Review-Journal and sales people from Winder Farms among others.

I just had these idiots come around today about the same thing. One even showed me a "license" from lvmpd that said they were allowed to solicit where signs were posted for no solicitation. he said that that card allowed him to go anywhere. Sure. That's how you got into the gated community right? Here's my license open the gates.

Why do you even open the door and talk to these people? I don't want them to get so much as a peek inside my house.

These are probably some of the same clowns that buy fake badges and red lights for the dash of their Hyundai and pretend their cops and try and pull people over here in town.

I'd recommend a revolver over a semi-auto. Semi-autos are much more prone to jam or misfire. You are not likely to need more than 5 shots that most revolvers hold (actually you aren't likely to need more than 2 or 3 in self defense situations). Many of the newer revolvers have sleek, smooth designs for easy draws. For example, check out the Ruger LCR in the 38 special or 357 mag models. They are lighter and actually a little smaller than the Glock 19 which makes them great for CCW.

1) Don't open the door when you know it's one of these creeps.

2) What's a CCW going to do for home defense?

3) 9mm? No thanks. Short-barrel 12 gauge pump all the way. If something happens when I'm not around, I want my wife to be able to simply point the dangerous end in trouble's general direction. No need to worry about accuracy. "Close" is good enough.

Agree, but you don't always know it's a creep. Bad guys have been known to dress in coats & ties, even impersonate police officers, etc.

2) What's a CCW going to do for home defense?

Most people that carry (at least that I know) always have it on them, home or away, just like carrying a wallet. You don't even notice it's there.

Are you going to keep a loaded shotgun by the front door at all times? Go retrieve it from another room every time before answering the door and then re-secure it each time afterwards? At close distance as there would be while answering the door, there is little spread to a shotgun pattern, even a sawed off one (you need to shoot people coming at you, not as they are running away). Due to it being bulkier, it's easier for the bad guy to see you pulling it out from behind the door before you can have it pointed at him, for him to lunge to block it or even take it away, etc before you can aim & fire. A pistol can even be fired from inside your pocket if needed... much better quickness and element of surprise.

Regardless of anyone's choice of weapon, s/he needs to become proficient with it at the firing range before attempting to have it available for security.
