My wife and I spent an interesting and enjoyable afternoon speaking with Ernie Shavers and watching highlight reels of some of his most famous fights (Ali, Holmes, Norton, etc.) while he regaled us with anecdotes.

A little background: we had gone to Boulevard Mall because we were interested in a car at the auto dealership located in the mall. When we got there, the car was not available and we were told that it would be an hour or so before it would be back. Rather than leave the mall and return later, we decided to hang out at the mall and do some shopping. As we were walking around, we came across a sports memorabilia store and decided to kill some time browsing around. As we walked in, we saw Ernie Shavers sitting at a desk with some of the Madison Square Garden posters from his fight with Ali in 1977. My wife struck up a conversation with him, and since the store (and the mall in general for that matter) was rather quiet, we just hung out with him for awhile.

I won't go into a lot of detail, but the man is truly amazing, not to mention friendly and personable. I realize that some of you younger people here may not remember him, so here's a link to his wiki bio: Earnie Shavers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Shavers was one of the hardest punchers in boxing history - sort of a 1970s version of Mike Tyson without the psychotic personality.

Ernie said that he'll be at the memorabilia store every day this week, so if anyone is interested in meeting him, stop by and say hello. If you're a boxing fan (and even if you're not), you won't regret taking the time to do so.

Sidenote: the car never did show up, so we ended up going to another delearship to test drive a similar model. (There's only three for sale in the entire city.)

I remember my father and I watching him fight when I was a child.
Larry Holmes said Shavers hit him harder than anybody else....and Holmes was well known for taking some BIG BIG punches and continue fighting.
Thanks for the heads up---I'm gonna try to get over there.
He sure sounds interesting.

Did you have a chance to make it over to the mall to meet Ernie?

BTW, to answer the question you asked when you repped me, the car is a Maserati Quattroporte. We ended up test driving one Wednesday at a different dealership, but it sold the next day to another interested party. I may end up buying one when we're in Miami in a couple of weeks since they have a much larger inventory there.

No. I got caught up in getting Mike Tyson tickets.
Then I saw the cheapest ones were $ 130.00 and opted out of that too.
Plus....a little birdie told me it's gonna be available to download {torrent} after it's over.
That was all I needed to hear.
