I've been told by several people that Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. I plan to make that a place to visit once I move. How far is it?

I knew someone who was from there and moved to a very small town in Illinois on the Mississippi River. She was from the California side. I was always curious how she could be happy there coming from Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places in the lower 48, IMHO. (Alaska is best overall).

As the crow flys, about 325 miles. Driving to South Lake Tahoe is apx. 450 miles, North Tahoe (Incline Village) is about 465 by car.

Its definitely somewhere worth visiting, I could spend days, if not weeks in the area, sightseeing, fishing, exploring the 49er gold rush country. Then from Tahoe your just a hop, skip & a jump Reno / Sparks / Carson City / Virginia City areas with all of its offerings, both cultural and historical.

Why not? It's like Californians flocking here on the weekends while some Nevadans flock to SoCal for Disneyland, beaches and other stuff. Hawaiians come here on vacation, we go there.

Now I want to go to the beach and dip the toes in the ocean. Sure does sound like a nice change from being in this broiler desert.

Hawaiian Air has direct flights from McCarran to Oahu and Maui. Sometimes the direct flight to Maui is significantly cheaper than flying into Honolulu first. But there are only a few direct flights to/from Maui each week.
