Several people noted unusually low auto insurance rates in another thread [mod cut-commenting on moderation] so I want to start a new thread on the subject of what people actually are paying for auto insurance.

A premium was mentioned of $179 for 6 months which I assume was for 15/30/10 coverage(minimum requirement). Personally I wouldn't feel safe without uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage for obvious reasons.

So how much do you pay???

BTW, here's a list of the 10 most frequently stolen vehicles in Nevada:

1992 Honda Accord
1995 Honda Civic
1990 Toyota Camry
1994 Nissan Sentra
2002 Dodge Ram
1997 Nissan Altima
1995 Saturn SL
2004 Ford F150 Pickup
1994 Acura Integra
1999 Chevrolet Pick-Up (Full Size)

I just did a quote search @carinsurance.com and found a substantially better deal than what I had been paying. Looks like I'll be making a switch from lizard dude to Allstate.

P.S. HUGE thanks to the poster(s) who posted their low rates which in turn alerted me to the fact that I was overpaying!

I just submitted the quote I got from Allstate to GEICO and they are reviewing and comparing coverage but I don't think they will be able to match it as it's 50% less.

I'd be interested to know what full coverage 500,000/500,000 with $100,000 uninsured motorist runs (mid price car with value about $15,0000 now.) Or even 500,000/300,000 if anyone carries that.

Rates for ALL major insurance companies always start out low. Great newcomer deals and specials are always available to lure people in. Its not always about the initial rates, its about where your rate will be in 3, 5 10 years. I have been with my company for about 12 years now(USAA).

I probably received the worst quote ever when I first signed up. About $125 a month for LIABILITY on an 1987 vehicle. My rate since then has dropped more than I can count on both hands. Every life changing moment seems to affect my insurance policy in a positive way. Marriage, multiple policy, multi car, no accident, age, longevity at the company, group enrollment, good credit, home purchase, automatic transfers...all of which has caused my rate to drop.

If were to switch companies I would have to start from scratch.

My current rate is extremely discounted since I have property insurance, life insurance for all family members, and insurance for 3 vehicles.

Have you ever filed a claim with USAA? I have read some real horror stories.

The top of the insurance horror stories I have heard is from people who were insured by Geico. I think USAA has a good reputation, but you must be a military member, veteran or family member of same to be a member of USAA. I have also heard great things about Amica Mutual, however they are somewhat expensive, but you get what you pay for I suppose in this case. Plus, as a mutual, you do get dividend checks annually.

Something to consider when seeking lower rates on your auto (and homeowners) insurance, is if you can afford the hit to your wallet in the event of a claim, increasing your deductible will dramatically reduce your premium.

I carry a $1000 deductible on my cars and a $5000 on my homes. All are insured with Mercury Insurance in California (A subsidiary of Mercury, Poliseek or something like that, covers my home in Henderson)

Full Coverage Auto Insurance for 3 cars (07 Honda Fit, 07 Nissan Altima and 11 Scion XB) with 3 drivers, including my teen daughter, is $2400/year. All of us have clean driving records with no at fault accidents though there have been a few accidents in recent years. Also we drive a combined 70,000 miles or so per year. This also includes all the stuff like Uninsured/Under Insured Motorist, Rental Cars, Roadside Assistance etc.

The homes come in at $520/year for the California home and $250/year for the Henderson home. We have never made a claim against either HO policy.

1 other thing that now affects a person's insurance rates is their credit. So if you have taken a hit of 150 or so points due to foreclosure or short sale or any other credit problems, that will now impact your rates. I don't quite understand how ability or inability to pay your bills on time impacts a persons ability to drive a car, but the insurance companies seem to think that it does.
