I had to swap my Wisconsin DL for a Nevada DL and was surprised at how efficient it was:

I walked in at 1558 yesterday--it closed at 1600--and was out of there by 1643. The place was busy but they called my number, took my documents, and took my dl photo all within 45 minutes.

WOW!!

The last time I had to get my DL I waited in line for four hours in Green Bay.

Govt working.

What kind of docs did you need to take with you in order to swap DL?

My old DL (which they punched a whole in), my new lease, my passport (most folks will use an original birth certificate) and my social security card.

Very quick and painless.

I found that going to the one on Decateur when it first opens in the morning is even faster than that!

Been going to the Nevada DMV since 1964. I've always found them to be friendly and efficient. But, when the California invasion first hit us in the late 80's/early 90's, they were swamped everyday, and I did wait in line for a long time on maybe three occasions. Then they changed their methods, plus new technology, and now it is usually very quick. Last time I didn't even get my forms filled out before I was called. Didn't matter. They just helped me with it.

I've seen many posts on this board about how awful it is to try and get things done at a Las Vegas DMV. But, I had just the opposite experience. I went in prepared after reading what was required on the DMV website and staff were friendly, efficient and professional.

Got my Seasonal ID at the East Sahara DMV - hardly any lines and no fuss.

I remember back when the DMV switched computer systems and the migration was a complete and utter disaster. (I think this was in the nineties.) You'd be standing in line for hours with screaming kids running around and switching your weight from leg to leg because your feet were starting to hurt.

Once they worked the kinks out and built some new offices, the experience improved dramatically. You can renew your registration or drivers license online in most cases. The DMV office at North Decatur has a snack bar, and you are issued a number after they confirm you have everything you need to complete your transaction. Then you get to sit down rather than stand.

There was nothing worse in the old days than standing in line for an hour and finally reaching the window only to be told that you were missing a crucial piece of documentation. Ugh.

The DMV still has it's issues, but it's vastly improved.

Dyn, I'm sure you remember when the DMV was across the street from where it is now. It was a small building and you could park right at the front door. One time I saw a guy going for his driver's test get in the car with the guy from DMV. He started backing out and took the whole side off the car next to him. That was the end of his test. I think he failed.
