Vegas Sucks - YouTube
With the building of Hoover Dam, Las Vegas really started to grow and become more and more populated.

That was the beginning of the building and growth booms, and the Las Vegas Strip didn't even exist yet, yet people were moving here in big numbers!

My grandparents moved here in 1913 and lived on Fourth Street, near where the D is now. There was a steady stream of people coming to live and building was going on, even then, but the bigger blast of new residents happened with the building of the dam.

In these times, with so many people >hearing about how wonderful Las Vegas is<, them visiting here and loving the Las Vegas Blvd experience, coupled with affordable housing, great weather, low or no taxes, easily attainable jobs, it attracts people.

The place would have grown, as every place does, but I do agree that the Las Vegas Strip and the building frenzy attracted a lot more people at a much more rapid pace over a short period of time, as opposed to a normal growth pattern would have, simply because more and more people came to see the sights and didn't want to leave, lol

Blessings

Yes, the Strip is no factor at all. All us snowbirds that are buying places in Vegas are moving here (and Arizona) because of the wonderful Winter weather and not having to deal with snow at places we had to live at before we retired. We frequent the locals casinos that are FAR AWAY from the Strip mostly. The Strip surely had nothing to do with our decision.

Without the Strip, there wouldn't be any locals' casinos, there wouldn't be a lot of concerts, and the economy would limp along with underpaid people supporting the Air Force Base (and not much else). You don't need to visit the Strip to indirectly benefit from it. Be thankful for all those bad-at-math tourists every year when the property tax bill arrives.

The original poster asked if we would move to Vegas if the Strip wasn't there. Yes I would. Taxes are cheap in Arizona too...It's all about the weather. I guess if the locals casinos were not there we'd have to go to Laughlin, Mesquite, etc....

"In your honest opinion, without the strip what would Vegas really be other then a desert loaded with trailer parks and a few houses?"

Obviously Las Vegas without the strip/casinos/resorts would have been something completely different. To what? Who knows?

Did other types of businesses and industries over the past decades not invest in Las Vegas due to the strip/gaming element? Meaning, by not having the strip and gaming element did Las Vegas have a chance to become a centerpiece for another industry like autos to Detroit, film to Hollywood or finance to NYC? Would Las Vegas now be a small desert community like Barstow or a bathroom/gasoline stop like Baker for travelers on their way to Utah or California? I don't know the answer.

Gaming is what it is and this is what got Las Vegas on the map- thanks to Hoover Dam. An industry was created, mostly positive IMO and from this industry many other unrelated businesses were created. Las Vegas will continue to evolve.

-Cheers.

Aside from writing a fiction book there is no reason to deal with the subject.

Las Vegas would certainly exist. The local water and the Colorado water guarantee that.

But what it would be is not knowable. Something between Phoenix and Tucson at a guess...

But it could have been wonderfully better or catastrophically worse. Somewhere between San Jose and bad Inland Empire.

I would point out that LV had gambling long before the strip. If the strip never came to exist, gambling would have likely expanded along Fremont street.

I think a better question is, what would have Vegas become if the mob didn't discover and invest in it?

Yep long before Segal ever step foot in NV. Every Race and Sports book in NV was taking action from every illegal book maker in the country to keep their book in balance.
