Just wanted to catch your attention with the title. lol

As Vegas residents or visitors do you notice any discrimination based on size in Vegas? Do you know of anyone who has been discriminated against based solely on their size? I know it is a problem all over the world however it seems to be an even bigger problem in the United States. I understand on the strip most times the goal is who can wear the least amount of clothes. I can see the reasoning behind (although don't agree with) the discrimination in hiring practices at places where they expect you to wear skimpy costumes as a uniform. However, I'm talking about off the strip in normal everyday occurrences. I just wondered if size discrimination was more prevalent in Vegas since it's portrayed as such a flashy entertainment driven city.

Better looking people are more likely to be hired than less attractive people, in virtually all jobs and locations. The key is to not make it obvious that someone is being passed over because of their size. Even for 'normal' jobs, being attractive helps, while being larger and less attractive hurts.

Well, being gone for a bit and now coming back..to a most interesting thread title movingon1vegas!

I've been here for decades, size certainly helps (sometimes) in certain types of jobs. You want to be a showgirl, cocktail waitress, stripper or dancer, size certainly "enhances" your portfolio.

In everyday life, honestly movingon, size DOESN'T matter. For most professions, especially in the "business" world, proper dress is the "norm" and lots of business have "dress codes" or acknowledged standards for dress, just like any other place in the country.

Your perception of "size matters" is not exlcusive to Las Vegas, it's actually all over the world. I've traveled all over Europe and the female form is well exploited there in all the media. They are much more liberal about showing "size" than we are here in the US. And that mentality has been around for eons...the female form has always been looked upon as a thing of absolute beauty and it still holds true today.

I honestly don't think anyone would discriminate in hiring you based on "size" alone. For normal everyday jobs NO, but certain entertainment, tip based skimpy costumed jobs..YES, "size" certainly helps.

While we DO have professions here in LV, unique to other parts of the country, that "size" might certainly be to your benefit, we also DO have most everyday, ordinary jobs in which size DOESN'T matter. Just like any other place you can think of.

I would think if one is male and trying out for a part in 'Thunder from Down Under', that size would definitely matter!

Not really...just stuff some rolled up socks in there and it gives the illusion you are bigger.

Yes, size discrimination does exist. Good luck getting a job at the front desk if you're a big person. Forget about getting into the high end night clubs. It doesn't matter to me, since I don't go out clubbing. Still, weight is still the last safe discrimination.

I don't think size is any more of an issue here than anywhere else unless you are talking about the strip. Ugly doesn't seem to be a problem either. Not to sound rude, well maybe a little, but when I go out to eat and the person serving my food looks like a relative of the hunchback of notre dame I tend to lose my appetite.
