Las Vegas has a glut of cool 50s architecture because that is when the area blew up. It seems that the trend is that the nicest parts of the LV area are on the fringes like Summerlin or Henderson. Are there any areas of Vegas that are a bit older (50s/60s) that are still safe communities with high rated schools?

I LOVE Paradise Palms. I would live there! I tried for a couple years to buy there but no such luck. These homes are incredibly cool!

Lot's of people are scared to death of this area and you will be told to live in Summerlin or Henderson. And if you have kids to educate, they are right.

Not good areas, unfortunately. Its 7 Hills, Southern Highlands, Green Valley, Red Rock, and parts of Summerlin, and far Northwest, Lone Mountain is good too. Rest of Vegas is not that great to live in. However, to visit, its ok.

Look around Rancho and Okey, more so just north or west of. I own two large rental houses in that area on large lots. There are NO rentals decent houses in this area and the demand for good large houses is high. It is 5 min to strip, I-15, and Costco Business.

There are lots of choices as long as school is not an issue. There are virtually no top 25% schools, except magnets, in the central city.

If you find a place off Alta or Rancho you can use the local Catholic school. That works in a few other places...but in general the central city public schools are pretty bad. If you are well off you can use the private schools which are pretty good to excellent but expensive.

No kids involved there are tons of places.

I would however suggest some caution. There are certain functional defects in 50 and 60s homes that are very difficult to fix..low ceilings for example. And a redo of a dated 70s house can easily run $25,000 to $50,000. A good friend picked up a house for free on a half acre off Rancho and then spent $250,000 to make it livable.

The problem with the few nice(er) older areas is that they are completely surrounded by not so nice areas. When you go to the grocery store you'll see that buying in those areas was a mistake.

Here we go again many of the older homes are on the East side of LV off of DI and etc. Some people need to get un stuck from thinking they live in the garden of Eden and the East side is a slum. There are many areas which are great communities with great people who also are on this form. Below you will find the address of vintage homes surrounding the Las Vegas national golf course area on DI. Another place ith vintage homes is on Sandhill rd taking DI and turning right left on Sandhill and exploring the side streets. Many houses in this are do need work, but will have the value when completed. i put 130K into a mess pf a house in Rancho Bonito and am about to put 75K into another. Realize that these houses are 1970's built, are 3,100 to 3,700 sq. feet and on 11K to .33 acre lots.

Before and after.
