Red Springs is a park/preserve on the west side off 157 just before Red Rock Canyon at Calico basin. As a matter of fact the "red" mountain range in Red Rock Canyon are one side and Red Springs is the other side of the same mountain range.

I believe this is the area in Red Rock being referenced: Hiking Around Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon NCA, Red Spring Boardwalk. It can be accessed outside of the fee area.

Well we live in the Lone Mountain area a lot of "horse properties" out here. We are on a 1/2 acre plus. There is little to no crime out here, as pointed out lots of dogs and even more gun owners It is usually 5-7 degrees cooler at our house than downtown and Henderson. Stays that way pretty much year round out here. It is a nice quiet area especially at night and most people watch out for strange folks around the area. Shopping and restaurants are plentiful and close. There are some areas near here with housing on smaller lots in the Centennial Hills area. We love it out here and are very happy we chose to live in the LM area.

As for building a pool pretty much nailed it already. Look at $40-50k for something simple. We did not build one when we moved out here in 2011 and are now regretting that. We will likely build ours in a few years as the military has us living in DC for the next few years, although I split my time between the two places.

We are open to renting/buying/building and have looked at Summerlin and Centennial Hills for Renting/Buying. Recently we noticed a number of new homes being built in between those two places (in the unincorporated areas sort of near Lone Mountain Park) and are considering a new build. I am leery of building in the current market, but the opportunity to build and get exactly what we want is very appealing. If we buy or build, we would probably rent the home out in a few years when we move again... so we want a place that could be in a 'rent-able' area.

I have a number of questions:

1) What is this area East/North of Lone Mountain Park like? I know it is more rural... but what about crime, traffic, etc?

2) What grocery/stores/restaurants/shopping areas would you recommend for this area? We don't mind driving a little bit further to shop in less sketchy stores/areas.

3) We have two small children (a 6 month and a 2 year old), what does Vegas have that they would enjoy over the next few years of their life? Schools aren't a major concern since we plan to move before they reach formative ages and my wife was a teacher and will be schooling them all the time anyway...

4) Cost to build a reasonable size pool (if we build or buy a home without one)?

5) If we rent or buy--what areas are good for a family of four with two young kids?

Thanks!

before I answer some of your questions, I would STRONGLY consider NOT moving here. its a retirement/entertainment community, a party town, a town to not raise children. It is only a good town for those with no formal education, that are hard workers OR for retired and responsible folks who are winding down and want to enjoy life before they die. Some might disagree with me, but I have been here over 10 years, and I have a good feel for this place. Can't wait to get out myself.

1. Lone Mountain is a GREAT area. up and coming spot, and quiet. But, in 5-10 years, the clowns will start ruining it. They always do.

2. The stores here are not very good. Smiths is the best. Food is cheap here, that is for sure.

3. Raising children here is a big mistake.

4. Not sure about the pool, but you better get a few references. People here are not honest, like other cities.

5. Henderson is the place to live. Don't mess with Vegas. Also, Boulder City is not bad for children. Its a bit weird and quiet there, but if you like boating and no casinos, then its a good spot.

Henderson is a great city, but Vegas really ruins it. Again, the suggestion is to be careful moving here. I would only do it if I had a great job, and had a few honest people I could count on, because you will not meet to many high character people here. No way.

Jeez, not this bunk again! A lot of mis-information scattered about Vegas as usual.

To this day, now going on 8 years here, it still amazes me how Vegas is so bad for children to be raised here. My 11-year old twins getting straight A's year after year while doing Common Core and pre-algebra. How they are playing in numerous sports teams with their friends and enjoying their tween lives going to the numerous parks here in Vegas, only to spend family time going to Battle Blast on Sahara or the Pinball Hall of Fame.

Then you have those gawd-awful places to go swimming such as several YMCA's, Wet N Wild and Cowabunga Bay or maybe take some rides at Adventuredome, NYNY, Stratosphere. Of course, I haven't covered all the libraries especially in the crime-ridden part known as the NW. Furthermore, those terrible grocery stores such as Vons (Safeway), Glaziers, Sprouts, Fresh and Easy. Just awful I tell ya!

But hey, you keep spreading that manure while searching for that utopia

Small areas in parks where you push a button and cold water comes out of the ground and fills buckets that tip over when filled. The water even in today's temps is really cold.

I appreciate your love for Southern Nevada, but you must not be aware of the "underground" world out here, full of hustlers and people looking for something for nothing. Sure, that exists in all cities, but in Vegas, you have a majority of these types lurking around, some in your own quiet neighborhood.

I guess a city that was founded on gambling is just "weak" at its core.

Vegas lacks character is what I am getting at.

But, I still have to applaud people like you (unaware perhaps?, living in your own world?), who are able to get by this obvious weakness of the city, and still overcome to raise good children.

Maybe I think too much...maybe that is my problem?

Good luck with everything!

How your children turn out are a direct reflection on the parents. For parents to blame the environment they grow up in is a cop out. They live in your house and eat at your dinner table, THE most important place parenting takes place. I'm a father of 4 and my wife and I stayed involved in all of their education and development, manners, responsibilities, obligations and taught them common sense. Today they are all successful adults, morally sound and contributors to society. We raised them in NY, but wouldn't have mattered where because we, the parents, would be the same.

It's easy to place blame elsewhere.

I've lived in Vegas for 22 years .. Summerlin is beautiful .. Try and stay closest to Red Rock station casino .. Other options -southwest . green valley ranch , Athem , seven hills , Southern highlands is nice also but crowded .. If you stick to those areas ull be fine .. Don't go outskirts stay in area .. Ull find reasonable prices to rent in southern highlands . We pay 1500$ for 2800 sq ft . As for schools go for private or charter .. NO PUBLiC .. As per shopping Summerlin just built a beautiful mall .( next to red rock casino) Good Luck and hope this helps
