Moved to Vegas 2 years ago and I have centurylink for internet and landline. I use to get
internet download speeds around 5-6 mbps (hard wire). For awhile now, I've been getting slow download
speeds when watching videos. After some research, I found out 1.5 mbps is the max
download speed for my area. That speed is unrealistic with today's internet content. I was thinking
of switching to Cox for download speeds up to 15 mbps. While I realize speeds vary with many
factors, 1.5 is unacceptable. When I'm in CA, I get around 6 mbps dowload speed with Time Warner (wireless). At work, I'm getting 15 mbps (hard wire) download speeds with AT&T U-Verse. Customer service sucks with the majority of utility companies, but anybody have input with Cox internet speeds compared to Centurylink?

Hundreds of threads on this, but to summarize them, Cox is faster.

Cox is faster, and The max speed you can get with Century links fiber (residential) is 45mb (As I just found out at a friends house)

I checked my internet speed tonight on Cox and it said I was getting almost 60mbps. But when I'm playing Netflix or Amazon, etc. it stops and buffers all the time. And we have a kind of expensive router, and I even have a booster on that in my office, and closer to the TV, since the router is in my wife's office with the modem. She works from home so it has to be good.

I had the same problem. I ended up hooking up the household Roku 3 units through wired CAT6 connections and all was good again.

Yep, that's what I thought. Cable has got to be faster than my DSL. Even if I don't get a true 15 mbps, anything has to be faster than my current 1.5 mbps. Last speed test at home was 1.95 and 1.84 download (hard wire). I'm on a wirless in another state and I'm getting 6.9 and 8.0 download. At work today, I got 15.4 and 15.3 download (hard wire). Centurylink sucks. What would they have to do to increase this speed? Probably rewire my neighborhood grid?

Is your 'booster' a wifi extender? You shouldn't have a problem if the extender and router are the newer 802.11ac models. I recently upgraded my wifi extender and now I get the full 100 mbps over wifi. I never see buffering for Netflix, Amazon, MLBTV or any other service. 5 mbps is sufficient for Netflix HD content.
