I have issues with the internet all day every day. I wish we had fiber optic internet from a real provider.
That makes two of us.

Dear Hotjambalaya,

We are writing to inform you of an upcoming change to Cox High Speed Internet service in your area related to data usage.

Your Cox High Speed Internet service currently includes a data plan of 1 TB (1,024 GB). Beginning 07/06/2017, if you exceed your monthly data plan we will automatically provide additional blocks of data for $10 per 50 gigabytes (GB), as needed. This will not impact 98% percent of customers, but instead only charges the heaviest Internet users.

To help you get accustomed to this change, you will be provided a grace period for your first two billing cycles after the effective date. You will not be charged if you exceed your data plan during this grace period.
I got this too. Makes me angry because I very specifically asked before I signed up if there were usage limits and I was told no. I signed on to their data usage app and looked at my history. So far I haven't even come close to 1TB in a month. I hate it when they change the rules!

I've mentioned this was coming. With all the "cable cutters" cox has to make up the lost revenue somewhere. Everyone who uses Netflix, Amazon streaming video etc should take note.

Apparently I used 1.25tb last month and 1.2tb the month before.
Last year, with same internet usage, I used 350-400gb. So somehow I am tripling my internet usage? I don't have netflix and I don't stream anything. No pandora none of that. I do the same thing now as I did 1 year ago, 5 years ago, and 10 years ago. I download less shows than I used to if anything. I barely have time to watch anything.

Thought I was a heavy user but I don't even come close! How many people are using your service? I wonder if it's caused by online gaming?

We don't online game. Hell, we don't offline game either. As I said, we've been doing the same thing since we moved here. Nothing has changed at all.

EA, is there any chance any of your next door neighbors are piggy backing on your wifi? Not sure if it applies to home networks but I had a relative stay with us who had a 3G Ipad. She didn't hook up to our wifi and instead inadvertently used her 3G and left her Ipad on. Apparently she got a huge bill from her facebook streaming all night because she left it on.

No way. We have it secured with a monster password (not a factory one) there's 2 pcs 1 phone and 1 ipad hooked up to the router. The phone and Ipad are rarely ever used at home (bathroom mainly) and the majority of our browsing is facebook and youtube same as it's been for years.

Same thing happens with my phone. I am on the att go plan. 45 a month. When I started it had 1gb of internet and I would go over a bit and it would slow down but still work. Then they doubled it to 2gb. Same thing. I would go over a bit and it would slow down. I started this when I started Lyft. Now they give me 6gb a month and I still go over a bit. When it was 1gb I'd go over like .25gb so it's not like I was doing an additional 6gb back then. I shouldn't have gone over any when they bumped it up to 2. I think they just like messing with customers.

EA that's really weird. Do you leave the pc's on all the time? I know pc's can get malware and therefore become part of a botnet. Which is used in DOS (Denial of Service) attacks around the globe.

I would definitely check your anti-virus to make sure it's up to date etc. Although Linux is not immune to malware etc, that's what I use and it's a much better experience anyway.

Your experience is definitely irregular, as you say your internet habits haven't changed. Use a packet sniffer to see what's going on on your internet connection.

I use a wifi router with aftermarket TomatoUSB firmware and it tracks bandwidth usage. I'm guessing some stock firmware have the same feature. My wifi router is showing pretty much the same numbers Cox provided. Could be useful for tracking down where bandwidth is going.
