Has anyone gotten one and is there a downside to the offer? They sent me an email for a free thermostat and installation. It's a Power Shift Smart Thermostat and it's supposed to save me at least $100 per year.

I got the same offer shortly after buying my condo (two years ago). I tried to get it but at the time, NVEnergy told me they only offered it to actual houses, not condos. Instead of arguing with them, I just went out of pocket and bought one from Amazon (LOVE IT).

Fast forward a year and a half, and my parents, who live in a house near me, got the same offer. My mom called them about it and got the downside: if you opt in, NVEnergy gains the right to alter your in-home temperature! The rep told my mom that she would be required to increase the in-home temp by as much as 4 degrees during parts of the day. Failure to do so meant that NVEnergy would come back and uninstall the thermostat. We almost laughed in their faces.

My smart thermostat is one of the best purchases I've made for my condo, and I'm so glad I went out of pocket instead of letting NVEnergy's grubby fingers control an aspect of my home.

We had one installed. The above poster has explained it perfectly. In addition, the unit was miserably hard to program and use. Had them come out and take it out in a week.

Not sure if it's the same thing but I got one from signing up to time of use

There are energy events where NV energy will change your preprogrammed ac schedule, decreasing (for pre cooling) or increasing the temp, etc

You can opt out of these energy events. The thermostat is "smart" in that it will alter the temp to try to save money. It can get annoying sometimes

I'm almost never affected because I have my ac off (and NV Energy can't turn it on or off) during 1-7pm (and other times) and run my swamp cooler instead

I've had it for two or three years now. Yes, when they adjust your temperature it is annoying, but you can call them and "opt out" of that feature. I did over a year ago and my thermostat only adjusts when I want it to.

It's pretty much just a free internet controllable thermostat. You can access it from your home PC or they have a mobile app. I don't have any complaints, it's easy to use.

We had one when we lived in Reno. It was ok but we were pretty frugal with the AC and never had it below 78, and they would raise to 82 whenever they felt like it. I don't recall being able to opt out of that feature but you could manually adjust it for a short time.

I hate programmable thermostats. Most of them are difficult to program and having someone else have the ability to adjust something in your own home is absurd. Opt-out feature or not. No thanks.

I thought that only happened with the slumlords on the south side of Chicago who turned people's heat down to 62* in the winter.

I have had it NV Energy's smart thermostat for 3+ years now. Yes they do adjust the temperature often and it does get annoying. But I have signed up for average monthly billing and the bills have dropped from $87 to $54 to only $36 per month this year! It's saving me a lot of money!
