Default Very different

It depends on what you like. Both very different. Personally I see both as resort cities since and would be hesitant to live in both.

Been to both and I have to say Las Vegas (at least around the strip) has a more action exiting vibe full of glitz and glamour like L.A. or Miami. It has that flashy superficial vibe like the other two cities I stated, but that was just my experiance. It seemed very into keeping up to hip and new trendsPlus vegas is much more expensive because of this and your typical upper class sub-division in vegas is much more expensive. AS far the weather, it's similar but a little different. Vegas recieves more of a 4 seasons then phoenix, yet notice how I said MORE of a seasonal change since it is a little cooler. Fall and Spring are beautiful. Summer is hell hot with July/August reaching 110 Degreez, not quite the 120 degreez of phoenix, yet till hot. In winter it's also alot cooler. Unlike phoenix in Dec and Jan in vegas it can freeze at night on several nights and their are even snow flakes once in awhile

Phoenix is very different. It is much more laid back and not as image concious. People go to Phoenix to get away from it all and relax, unlike the action of Vegas. It is more of a city and I would compare it more to a place like Tampa or san diego since it's a warm relaxing vacation place yet also a livable city. The people are a little older in phoenix. It is overall cheaper in phoenix then vegas, yet this is excluding the city of Scottsdale which has been called "the Beverly Hills of the Desert". Again the weather is similar but in phoenix the seasons consist of 3, mild, hot, and roasting. Intellectually both lack, yet Phoenix(excluding scottsdale) is less fake and plastic.

Both are into looks and appearence with vegas being to bigger one. Also in vegas their seems to be a bigger gap of rich and poor. The rich play in Vegas and the Poor work hard in the casino's and resorts to allow the rich to play. In Phoenix their is a much larger middle class.

If you love more traffic, more smog, hotter then Phoenix is the place for you.

As for books, I am sure if Vegas or Phoenix doesn't have it, you can find it on the internet and order it.

Were you thinking in terms of book clubs to socialize in?

From a visitor's perspective....I think Las Vegas would have more perhaps not "intellectual" but at least "cultural" stuff compared to Phoenix. Vegas has a LOT of world-class restaurants and performances on the Strip which is an amazing experience. And actually a lot of exhibits including all those zoos and aquariums (Mandalay bay comes to mind first). Its what separates Vegas from Atlantic City, Biloxi, and the hudnreds of Indian casinos throughout the country.

Also, Vegas is also much closer to the beaches in California than Phoenix which is why if I move to the Southwest Vegas is looking much more attractive than Phoenix. The Las Vegas area also has Lake Mead where people do boating and fishing and the Grand Canyon is nearby not to mention L.A. And I would assume Vegas is much more of an international and diverse place given that there are always visitors from all parts of the world going there to have a good time.

But anyone else can shed light on temperature in Phoenix vs. Las Vegas? Exactly how much cooler is Nevada and humidity-wise?

i never understood why ppl say that Las Vegas has no culture...look at the Strip, with all the restaurants, all the attractions, all the museums, all the exhibits (Bodies and Titanic)...then there is off-strip such as the Springs Preserve, and Museum Row, on Las Vegas Blvd. N., Red Rock has plenty of culture as well, and then there's the Las Vegas Art Museum and First Friday and Third Thursday, and the list goes on and on...

The East Fremont entertainment district is coming together rapidly as well. This will be a place where you can see live music of several different genres in a radius of just a couple blocks. Rock, Jazz, Electronica, Blues, and whatever else strikes your fancy - and most importantly NO VIDEO POKER! There are already a few venues open, with more coming soon. I'm excited!

Phoenix is the armpit of the Southwest.

Vegas is the part right above the armpit more towards the shoulder, not as smelly, dirty or hot.

Couldn't they afford punctuation marks where you went to school? Or lower case?

It's mostly the eastern snobs that don't get it, kid. They think because they have more boring, archaic, stuff to do that nobody really likes anyway, it makes them more "cultured". It seems that a lot of what people think of as culture is really history; which is ok. I like anything historical myself. But these Johnny come lately's don't realize that Las Vegas is a relatively new town, so we aren't likely to come up with a lot of stuff to put in a museum. Nor can things like opera, ballet, or the philharmonic orchestra compete with the Strip. And the Strip is the lifeblood of Las Vegas whether they like it or not. If they don't like it here, why don't they just move on? Because they do like it; they are just to hypocritical to admit it.

That's the description that has eluded me for years, ever since the first time I saw Phoenix; but you hit the nail on the head. Vegas is not an ugly city anymore as it was in the 60's and 70's. But Phoenix seems double ugly to me. And the weather really sucks.
