Post Esthetician seeks better lifestyle

Hi everybody! I just want to say, I have been an avid fan of this site - I moved to Seattle a year and a half ago from Jacksonville, FL and all the folks in the Seattle forum really did a bang-up job giving me info, input, and advice. I'm hoping you all will be just as kind.

I have decided to move to Vegas after the summer's over - Seattle is too passive-aggressive for me. The yuppy tree-hugging life ain't for me! I am a licensed esthetician and I work in a spa/salon doing facials, waxing, body treatments, etc. There isn't a high demand for someone in my position in the Pacific Northwest. So, I feel as though I must make a break for it, and go where I'm needed. I have visited Vegas several times in the last few years and loved every minute of it. So my question: Would any of you suggest I start looking for esthetician jobs on the strip vs. off the strip? Also, do any of you know where I can find salon/spa job postings other than craigslist? My last question: How easy is it to make friends in Vegas? I am a respectable 27 year old female with a wicked sense of humor - I definitely don't take life too seriously! (Omg, that just sounded like a personal ad!)

I thank you all in advance!

YFE with sense of humor seeking vibrant city where YSF's put heavy emphasis on their appearance...the key for landing jobs on the strip is not ususally what you know...but who you know.

An esthetician specializes in the study of skin care, including facials, microdermabrasion, body wraps (relaxing treatments which involve hot linens, plastic sheets, and blankets), salt glows (an exfoliation treatment), waxing as a form of hair removal, cosmetic make-up services and other services with advanced training. Estheticians may work independently in a spa or salon or may assist a doctor in his or her practice. Working with a doctor an esthetician may perform more advanced services that require a doctor's supervision, such as deep chemical peels. In addition to performing beauty services, an esthetician must be skilled in recommending skin and body care products and retailing them to their clients. Many state board cosmetology schools do not offer training in retailing, but post graduate colleges will offer training in retailing skills.

An esthetician can be licensed solely for that skill. An esthetician is not necessarily licensed in cosmetology, but is typically well versed in knowledge of skin care.

(just in case anyone else was wondering....)

And HA HA - my curiosity got the better of me and I found this...
Yahoo! HotJobs Questions and Answers: how much does an esthetician make ! i want to move to las vegas !?

According to this site Skin Care Chicks only make 14.7 K per year...

With the dry humidity, heat and wind, I would think your services are needed. You will probably only do well on this board for specifics, if you're lucky enough to run across someone in your line of work.

It may not be that we're ignoring you, we just really don't have the info. But we can tell you, everyone starts off the strip, unless they know someone.

Well, we have an awful lot of day spas/salon spas OFF the Strip. Just about every hair salon does waxing, facials, makeup, etc. I'd look up the Las Vegas yellow pages and start calling the beauty salons and day spas. You'll see there's an awful lot of them.

You can try the uber spas in the hotels, but in my opinion, you'd have a better chance of landing a position OFF the Las Vegas Strip to start with.

If you can move here, with a job already waiting for you, a bit of cash to fall back on, your own transportation, then you got it. You can always work for a while in a more locals place, away from the tourist corridors, gain experience and residency here in Las Vegas. Show stability. Then you can work up to working in one of those ritzy hotel spas when a position becomes available.

As far as making friends here? Be yourself and when you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours. Be outgoing. Works every time! People will be drawn to you and you'll make plenty of friends.

Las Vegas sounds like a great place for you! Good luck!

Thanks to all of you! Good to know that I need to "be in the know" regarding jobs on the strip.
