It can't be totally impossible, can it? I'm looking to buy a place in the LV area, and hoping to set my mom up there. She is elderly and doesn't drive and needs to feel that she can leave the house and have something nearby. At this point I am open to any suggestions. Thanks!

There are many areas with housing adjacent to shopping, but you've got to remember that at 110 degrees, Mom's not gonna want to do much walking. Some of the villages in Summerlin are next to the shopping centers- I'd start by looking there.

The obvious choice is Sun City Summerlin. The lower 25% has good access to a Smith and much else. If she has some coordination they also allow golf carts and have a golf cart gate to Smiths.

Another possiblity is Rainblow and Smoke Ranch. Lots of small houses with easy access to just about everything. I am not sure it has a full scale supermarket. Has a local but the nearest full size may be at Cheyenne roughly a mile away. One of the very few places where you can walk to the movies.

Olecapt is right about the Rainbow area because pretty much everything is there for good walking distance. Another area may be Buffalo and Lake Mead.

Get a realtor to do a search for homes in your price range and tell them it has to be near shopping. Make sure they keep it to the west of Rainbow. If you can get close to Boca Park she can find just about anything in the one center. How old is mom? You won't want an elderly woman crossing Las Vegas busy streets. We are the pedestrian accident capital of the world. And as Bob Kovacs pointed out, in the summer she won't want to walk anywhere. By the way, we only have two seasons...summer and January. One of the Sun Cities would be the best bet for an older person.
