I am considering moving to Las Vegas, and have a decent amount of experience, including 7 years in hotels(mostly restaurant and banquet server/bartending), including a little over a year recently at Tropicana Casino in Laughlin. I also have some experience in entertainment as a review writer and in public relations. Personally, I feel qualified to do well in the town, especially since I can start out with some pretty low expectations, as long as I can pull in at least $1,500 a month, I can wait for a better server/bartender/barback position to open up.

Now, here's the skinny: I have a record. In Arizona, I was convicted of felony criminal damage of up to $500 in 2002, and in 2008 felony sexual indecency, for being a drunken ass in public. Both of them are the lowest level felony you can get(as anyone from Arizona knows, everything is a felony here. They even have felony aggravated jaywalking!).

Anyway, seriously, what can I expect? Is it worth it to even bother trying? Will I be stuck in a really crappy job? Or can it be relatively easy to get a decent, preferably culinary union server/bartender gig as long as I have time on my side with a crappy job? Would I be better off with something in entertainment, with my media experience? I can go on forever with the questions, so I'll stop there. Thank you all very much.

I probably will not have to register, as like I said, I have worked for a Nevada casino before with no problem. As I understand it, registering with the gaming board is not necessary for restaurant positions. I understand there is recedivism concerns, however like I said, my previous charges are not exactly ones that typically you have to worry about. It is not a drug, violence, theft or sex crime, and not one typically thought of as one that would be recurring.

I guess what I am trying to get at is what are the chances of being hired in the restaurant capacity at a casino or restaurant with such a record? I already know I can get whatever certifications I need, even a sheriffs card if need be.

If it's related to gaming( dealers, floorman) you will need one.

We have people with degrees, and no criminal record, and they can not find any work. You will have absolutely NO chance getting a job here right now. I would stay where you are at.

90% of jobs require a sheriffs card.. it does a background check to see if you have felonies or misdemeanors... felony = no card = no job

Nevada gaming registration is not required for bar backing, bartending or serving. You don’t need a Sheriffs card either. Now if you can clear the perspective employers background check is another story.
