No doubt some waitresses will feel that way because that's the initial reaction. I'd have the reaction too at first. But the smart waitresses will recognize that it's very quick for me to drop a dollar on her tray, that it is unlikely to fall off, and $100 in dollar coin tips take up much less space in her tip jar than $100 in crumpled bills.

Ironically, I now sometimes get unusually exuberant reactions to a tip with a folded up $2 bill because the individual has mistakenly thought that I've handed them a $20!
Ha, ha. $2.00 bills are considered bad luck in Las Vegas, and you seldom ever see one. That exhuberance is probably fear...do I take it and risk bad luck, or do I refuse it and lose the two bucks?

Keep telling yourself these things...but what you are broadcasting is "RUBE!"

Leave the coins at home and act like a person.

That said, I wish we would go to coins. I enjoy handling the euro. They just feel good in your pocket, and your hand, and are easier to make change. But since we don't, don't try to be trend setter. You'll just look like a fool.

I'm just sayin...

Gee sir, not only are you a generous tipper. You are also so considerate to offer me currency in a smaller form factor because I have been having such a hard time keeping my tips secure and stationary.

Do yourself and the city a favour. Keep the coins at home. You end with a bigger reputation than Michael Jordan has in town for being a cheapskate stiff.

Cedar, just curious...have you ever bought a car and paid for it in pennies?

Uh, that'd be a no. But I've also never bought a car and paid for it in dollar bills.

I'm not going to inconvenience anyone my next trip. My main question was can I use them, and the original responses were that I can exchange them at the cashier's window. That's what I was looking for. My feeling on coins is the same as a few other people posted here (they are smaller and more handy to use) but I'm not going to Vegas to start a new trend or to swim upstream. Should people be reluctant to take them, I'll exchange them for dollar bills and use those instead.

Another thought. I assume you won't be carrying $200 silver dollars in your pockets all the time??? (Are those silver dollars or are you just happy to see me?).

If you leave them in the room, chances are good they won't be there when you get back unless the room has a safe.

Thanks, Mae West. In regards to safes in the rooms, I would venture to say that most, if not ALL, rooms in the major strip properties have them. At least that's been my experience at Monte Carlo, The Flamingo, Tropicana, The Orleans (off-strip), The Rio (off-strip) and The Golden Nugget (downtown). A room I once satyed at a few years ago, at AZ Charlies (off-strip) did not have one.

The dollar coins would have been a great idea if machines took them as input. All slots seem to be TITO today.

I'm a little TITO myself. Maybe I'll take a nap.
