I was just in MACAU for a week...just for people's curiousity, I wanted to compare it to Las Vegas - as that apparently these days, Macau is leading Vegas in revenue.

First off, there are very few slot machines in Macau. The few I saw, were put in back corners. I heard they have horrible payout rates, and are generally empty. Macau casinos are MUCH quieter as well without them all over the place.

Games - most games in Macau are Chinese gambling games. Most chosen by the casinos highly favor the casino. I quickly came to the conclusion that the reason Macau has made more revenue is because most things are heavily rigged in favor of the casino.

People - predominately mainland Chinese. You see very few foreigners - the few I saw were around the very very few poker rooms around. But 99.99% of the people in the casinos are chinese playing chinese type gambling games. Oh, and if I walk around Macau, I'll see westerners, non-chinese, snapping photos of the casinos and such, but seldom ever see them playing games in the casinos themselves - again because most games are unfamiliar.

Poker - only two casinos have poker rooms. Grand Lisboa and Wynn Casino. Only the Grand Lisboa has tournament structured games as well. There were a few other casinos that were SUPPOSEDLY to have poker, but shut them down - maybe not revenue making as the other casino games they play in Macau.

CITY - Macau is a beautiful city and fun to wander around. Very condensed - amazing architecture of Portuguese and Chinese everywhere. Very manegeable. I heard I'd be bored after a few days, but I stayed a week, and loved it everyday. I could spend MUCH more time there. It isn't just the casinos themselves (although I did get in a daily poker tournament habit), there is also a beach and a swimming pool on the beach, as well as just great exploring to do in the city of Macau. Incedibly safe as well, whatever time of day or night.

For gambling though, Las Vegas is MUCH more fare to the gamblers, and while still in favor of the casinos, nowhere near as much as Macau.

I couldn't wait to get out of Macau. Something about that island did not feel right. I will never go back. I never gambled, just stayed in the room.

What year was that? Years ago, I heard of a 'triad' problem. But that is long gone. Maybe you went years ago at that time?

I found Macau was EASY and SO SAFE to walk around...even at 2am or 3am, you could walk around, and no one bothers you, no lurkers or characters about, etc.

You missed out on seeing a really fantastic little city. I wouldn't go there to gamble, but for tourism and walking around, it was very comfortable and pleasant. Especially if a person like European and Chinese feel to things - amazing intermix of the two in the city's feel. The recent 'Fisherman's Wharf' is all plasticy/Vegas-like, and touristy, but also very interesting. THe old stuff is the best though.

From all I've heard, it is MUCH better now.

I have spent time in Hong Kong and plan to visit Macau one day. I think if Hong Kong was not so crowded casinos would have been built there.

JMO...it's a scary concept that their government is part owner of City Center. Sounds like a future episode of 'Locked Up Abroad' waiting to happen. When City Center fails to deliver...Americans beware.

Were you eating at all, while you were there? I was at the Mccarran the other day, and was amazed by how many overweight, unhealthy looking people there were. 7 out of 10 were obese. What about the cocktail waitresses?

Maybe I did forget to turn my brain on this morning...isn't Macau the place where they cane people who are caught chewing gum?

Singapore - well, sort of.

They cane people for major crimes. Chewing gum is a just a fine.

Either way, not Macau.
