That was my impression as well. 4 buildings, and ONE Casino? 3 of the towers non smoking? Yeah.. that's gonna go over REALLY good with the high rollers who like to gamble and have a cigar. I have heard of this problem with other non properties in town.. most of them look the other way if the money is right... but i got a feeling City Center will not.

It does feel as if someone wants to change Vegas by opening this place.. because it did NOT feel like Vegas to me.

Took it all in on Sunday.
Spectacular. Absolutely spectacular.

It's been nearly 4 years since I moved to Las Vegas ... What that area was then (steel, cranes, bulldozers) to what it is today (this contemporary-meets-urban-meets-futuristic-meets-minimalist city within a city), for me, was jaw-dropping.

I’m SO proud to live in a city where something of such magnitude and extravagance is literally MINUTES from our front/back yards ... I just think it's, for lack of better words, really, really cool.
My Sunday: Hiking at Red Rock Canyon, running errands, strolling City Center and the Strip, catching a movie at Town Square.
How many cities in the world can you spend your Sunday (a single day) in such a way???

Give it a shot guys.
Although the stores/restaurants do lean towards high-spenders, don't let that keep you from enjoying City Center. We parked at the Bellagio, took the tram over, had coffee and pastries, did some people-watching, did some window-shopping ... Spent less than $50.

Just my thoughts ... I think because the Strip is a tourist destination, it's easy (and understandable) for a disconnect to form between us (locals) and the Strip. Don't let that happen. You can have a wonderful afternoon or evening on the Strip only getting some gelato and watching the Fountains.
And the Strip DOES value and embrace us as much as it does the tourists. It's only at a quick glance that you may feel it does not or it would not. One of the restaurants we had dinner at over the summer (Yellowtail), after finding out I was a local, mailed me a hand-written Thank You card. Small gesture but much, much appreciated. Just one of many examples I can give.

I hope City Center is a huge success.
Congratulations and good luck to all involved with City Center!

It will look cool.. that I will not argue. From the pics I have seen inside its VERY nice looking.. and something I would really like. Just seems silly to me to take valuable gambling space and turn it into some kind of strange mega mall geared to people with more money than God during a recession. On top of that, residences? On the strip? How many hotel rooms have we lost because of that? One casino? All that land and only ONE? You do know those casinos bring in big bucks to this town.. putting one in the place of what might have been 4 seems silly. Now, had they put this downtown or built it off strip.. heck yes.. I would have thought it was a good idea, but not ON the strip.

I don't know.. I will take a look when Aria opens (I wont bother going into the other places.. as there is no gambling so no real reason to go there.) but I seriously doubt that it was a good idea to open a mini Dubai on the strip during one of the worst recessions since the great depression.

Also from the looks of things.. it looks like it will be a HUGE hassle to get into the place.. now that I could be wrong on.. but all I see is a mini spaghetti bowl inside there.. lol bridges, roads, entries, it looks like getting TO the place could be more of a hassle than its worth.

Coffee and pastries for 50 bucks? Meh.. I can get a dinner for 4 on that money at the Palms.. lol

I do believe the plans for this project were set before the economy tanked. Even so, I am coming in next week and I plan on being there to check out the Grand Opening party. Has anyone heard anything about it? I hear they are going to close the street and whoop it up-Vegas style!!! My husband is going to the Cirque show there on Sunday. I am so stinkin' jealous!!! I would love to see it! He got free tickets and I have to be bitterly freezing in this arctic tundra called Michigan...can't wait to get there! (btw, I know it is not warm there, but 40 compared to 14! I will take it!!)

Default Re:

As for the others who complain about it being designed for the whales, well what would you expect? One whale contributes more to the bottom line than tens of thousands of "average tourists". Whales want more and they get it. They aren't coming to Vegas to buy stuff from "middle America" mall stores so the valuable real estate isn't going to cater to them. The beauty of Vegas though is you can see and partake of whatever you want at City Center and all the rest of the upscale places and sleep at the Planet Hollywood across the street for less than half the cost. Why do people complain?[/quote]

I guess that's why it's been hard for Vegas to recover from the economy then because all the whales stopped coming here? From what I am hearing from my friends who work in casinos, the whales are still coming in, and yes they are spending much more than one "average tourist" would, but when you multiply that whale's spending by the number of "average tourists" spending, I'm sure the average tourists ARE coming out on top. The beauty of Las Vegas is that there is something for everyone to enjoy. From scenic landscapes for photography buffs, dive bars for those with not a whole lot of money looking to enjoy themselves, high end clubs for those who want to act like celebrities and pay like one too (I don't consider these people the smartest in the world...$400 for a bottle of Grey Goose? Lee's has them for $29.99!)

A lot of the visitation has been lost because of the number of average tourists who can't afford to visit, so please don't put the whales on a pedestal thinking they run the entire city.

Just viewed some photos...just looks like an ordinary shopping mall with a lot of expensive quasi art pieces around.

Regarding the upscale image of it...it made me think...I WONDER...will they have a fast-food court of Arbys, McDonalds, Burger King type stuff....OR...would it be a bunch of restaurants that would fit a more upscale image theme with the rest of the place?

Relatively positive critique from a New York Wall Street journal perspective.
