When I moved into my place I gave the landlord a cleaning deposit. I'm still confused about what exactly this means in Las Vegas. When I moved in it wasn't exactly "clean". The walls weren't freshly painted and other things could have been better.

So anywho...I'm hoping to be moving soon and I planned on getting the carpets cleaned before I moved. However, I wonder will landlord give me my "cleaning" deposit back or say they need to "clean" the place even though it wasn't "clean" when I got here.
For the record I do not plan to leave the place a mess. I do plan to clean before I move.

Just wanted to know what the general practice is here in Vegas in regards to the "cleaning" deposit.

When I lived in an apartment, we received the cleaning deposit back when we moved.

Go back to your contract. What are the stipulations for getting a refund on your cleaning deposit. Yeah, I know, a lot of places just want to rent the houses/apts and they are not as clean as we expect them when we move in, but they want them pristine when people move out. Go figure.

In my limited experience, but observing similar situations, consider it part of the rent. Most landlords spend it the moment they get it; your best bet is to negotiate prior to signing the lease.

I came to visit in June 08 and found my place (put partial deposit down at that time). I went back home to Ohio packed up all my stuff and drove back in July 08. When I got to the place it wasn't "cleaned" but... it wasn't like I was going to drive around the city to try to find a new place at that time. I went through the condo and wrote down everything that I saw which was wrong and had the landlords friend (who gave me keys & took the money) sign the paper. I've actually never met the landlord.

I'm moving to a new place in Vegas. I'm still loving it here and I don't see myself leaving anytime soon. @kimba01

they will use it to clean your place when you leave. did you also put down a security deposit? they have 21 days from the time you leave to refund or put it in writing what it was used for...

never paid a "cleaning deposit",but i would assume it's not a deposit,but a fee (aka non-refundable deposit ) for when you leave.

I got both my cleaning deposits back from the first two condos I lived in in Las Vegas.
It's always a good idea to take pictures of the place when you first move in AND when you move out along with a dated newspaper in each picture, especially if you find that it looks a little unclean. That way the landlord cannot say you left the apartment a mess.
A cleaning deposit is kinda like a good faith thing. I'm sure you'll have no probs if you take pictures after you clean.
