Hi everyone,

I am in the process of obtaining my 4 year Bachelors of Hotel Management degree in Canada and I am interested in working down in Vegas for one of the major hotel brands. Having been to Vegas over a dozen times, and having spent a good deal of time off strip getting to know the real town and which residential areas I like best, there's something there that just appeals to me. Whether its the freedom, the lower taxes, cheaper auto insurance, 24 hour convienence, or the weather, Vegas just appeals.

I get taxed to death in Canada, and I'm looking for a major change of pace into the US. Because I am a Canadian and I have the eligibility to use a TN-1 Visa with my chosen profession this seems easier than it would be for others it relaxes alot of the laws of visas specific only to Canadians.

Does anyone have experience using a TN-1 for Hotel Management? What are my chances of getting into the US for work if I accepted a position for say...transportation IE. Southwest Airlines instead of a hotel using the TN-1? Do employers in Vegas have a difficult time hiring Canadians?

Any specific guidelines I should know for future use?

imo, the hotel industry is 5yrs from coming back, plus since you are out of the country, that makes it even harder for you... and honestly in my opinion.. a hotel management degree doesnt mean a darn unless it came from unlv or cornell.. i have one.. it means nada.. these guys want VEGAS experience! are you prepared to make 8-9 bucks an hour for a couple years before you move up?

Hmm a good point, not much to live on. Perhaps it would be worth becoming more reputable in Canada before exploring prospects down there....I know University of Calgary gets scouted all the time for work in Canada, paying much more than 9 per hour.

If you’re legal to be hired for employment, the resorts will have no issues hiring you. Getting a job at the resorts is a matter of luck and timing. I know a couple of VP of Hotel Operations at major resorts that started at the front desk and went to CSN or UNLV later on down the road.

Mike, as I'm sure you're aware, you'll need an employment offer before you apply for the TN1 visa. That's likely to be your biggest challenge because you're going to be competing against local Vegas candidates.

Yea this is what i've read. The question is, do the major chains do any sort of leg work offering this? Or do they usually not even bother cause its one more hurdle to go through....

As far as work visas go, it doesn't get much easier than a TN1 - the possible exception being a F1 (student) practical training visa. So, I don't suspect a Vegas hotel would be reluctant to hire you because a TN1 visa is required, as much as you're just not local to them.
