Hey folks,
We got here Feb 16th and we're staying in some temp housing on base. Our house in 89031 is almost done being built yay! But I've noticed SO MUCH trash everywhere. Parking lots....the grossest is the diaper smooshed into the pavement. In nice areas and not so nice areas alike. Is this the normal standard around here? It probably seems worse to me because I just spent 4 years in Japan-where I doubt I ever saw 1 piece of trash on a public street. Really though, I opened my van door to go eat at Applebees and right there at my feet were 3 Starbucks cups. And a trash can 10 feet away. I just wanna scream REALLY PEOPLE?
Vent over. =)

That's unusual. I've never seen trash all over and it's always the thing that visitors from other states to my area remark about. How clean Las Vegas is.

It might also be that particular area you're in, near the AFB

I was in Vegas the past 3 days visiting friends. I'm wondering if it was because of the winds following the storms?

Yes, the desert environment combined with wind will carry trash all over the place. Nothing ever degrades in the dry environment. Combine that with a relatively flat valley and high winds and you get the Starbucks cup some moron dropped several months ago blowing down the street to accumulate in a pile several blocks away. One offender is obivously the Strip after a big party like New Years Eve, but the worst is illegal dumping out in the middle of the desert. Some of that crap eventually blows back into town.

Now, to be honest, most of the trash you see isn't stuff that was just thrown on the street. A lot of it blows out of trash bags and trash cans that aren't properly secured or that an animal gets into. I'm guessing the diaper falls into that category. Once it gets loose, it stays in the valley forever until someone is kind enough to pick it up.

Not really fair to compare to Japan, either. Japan is a very clean country and culturally prides itself on details like that.

I have notice more trash around not only in the burbs but also the strip, granted garbage gets thrown around in our wind storms, but I notice less public workers out picking up trash and that may be due to the cut backs to the budgets of our city and county.

We've had a lot of wind storms recently. It's always a problem in the desert where there is nothing to break up the wind, which blows hard enough to blow heavy items around, like out of overflowing Dempsey Dumpsters. That's one reason why it may be worse around apartment complexes. Being in the desert there is nothing to catch debris blowing around, and no heavy vegetation to hide it from sight. It's also a social problem, but it's all over the world, not just here. In fact the U.S. is pretty clean compared to a lot of countries. I often see people throwing trash out of car windows, and I wish a cop would have seen them and made them clean it up. Usually the car has an out of state license, particularly cars from eastern states where you see it more often than in the west.

But I really think the O/P is being superior, and has just found a sneaky way of putting us down, and letting us all know he's been to Japan and probably thinks none of us has ever been anywhere else. Bully for you, pjm.

That particular area of Northeast LV is trashier than other parts. And lately with all the winds, it's probably much worse!

Your in a desert and even in the desert there is this thing called wind.We have all experienced it,and in the Vegas "Valley" there's more wind than most places. And trash "everywhere"?Ehhh

Not my memory of LV unless it's on the strip in the summer or winter.

Wow people! Let me just say that I love Las Vegas and 4 years in Japan was enough to convince me that I'd much rather be here. Why would I be trying to sneakily put Las Vegans down, I am one now!
Sorry but there's trash all over the shopping parking lots, restaraunt lots and neighborhoods...and not the kind that mostly just blows around. I'm from Tucson and I know how the stuff can blow around. But 3 half full Starbucks cups?
Sorry to hit such a nerve but I don't have an agenda to compare Vegas to anywhere, nor one to insult anyone. Take a look around West Craig and north from there. Diapers full of urine also don't tend to blow around. Sheesh. Maybe time to get out of the house a lil?

That has got to be the most blatant display of an inferiority complex that I've ever seen and there are a lot of crybabies on the LV forum.
