What is with all the crime in this area lately? It seems like wherever you go, you are not safe. I live in Salisbury Township and last week Daisy Hill got held up. South 4th street is a mess of crime, MacArthur Road is crime ridden, CC Allentown is a joke.

I know they say its darkest before the dawn, but I don't see anyone doing anything about it. Maybe its me, I don't know, but I don't think I will be raising my family here.

Maybe its me but I grew up in the Philly area, then moved to Reading for College, then the Lehigh Valley. Based on those experiences - the crime here is small when it comes to the other areas. The problem that you are mentioning is not that crime is out of control - its that crime occurs on a more intimate level here. Meaning the Lehigh valley Area is such a small geographic area that the disturbance is closer to our traveled areas.

In most cases crime affects people involved in drugs and other questionable activities. But, of course there is some spillover. If you are driving a fancy car and look gullible, some hoodlum could try to rob you. The key is to be alert and act tough. If you feel comfortable and knowledgeable about using a gun, then carry a firearm.

As far as raising a family, I reccomend moving to South Carolina or some other small Southern town. In a few months once some health issues are resolved and finances are improved I hope to do this.

I daresay you could move to any small town to see a decrease in the crime rate. My son goes to a College in a town in the South very similar to where we live and the crime rate is a bit higher.

What part of Macarthur road is crime ridden? Let me know so I can stay out of this "Hood" LOL. Are you maybe talking about the Fairmont street area across from the Home Depot? The only crime I see is the traffic around the holidays, The poor signage between Schadt avenue and Eberhardt road, The Schadt ave Jughandle that should be closed(That is a rant for another day) and maybe all of the shoplifting at the "Ghetto" Wal-Mart. Other that, I don't see the crime. All metro areas have crime. Even Wilkes-Barre/Scranton isn't immune anymore. Before the mid-nineties, that area had virtually no large crime. Now there are shootings, stabbings, muggings. Just like the Lehigh Valley. The grass isn't always greener. Unless perhaps maybe you raise your kids in a small town in the middle of Kansas.

Crime indeed does occur everywhere. Some of the more morbid stories to emanate from here in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in recent memory include last year's brutal slaying of a gay porn producer by two of his rivals, in which he was stabbed dozens of times, nearly decapitated, and then had his home in an affluent suburb set ablaze. That same upscale part of our area also reeled a few years prior when state police unearthed several bodies that were buried in the backyard of local legend Hugo Selenski, who then proceeded to escape from the Luzerne County Prison by scaling the side wall with bedsheets. Just a few weeks ago a high school friend of mine, along with two other young people, were bludgeoned to death in a home in Scranton's South Side. This was Scranton's first mass homicide in a decade. As our area grows, so does its crime.

Where to begin. Someone was assualted with an aluminum bat inside the Walmart last week, the Vallero gas on the corner of Mickley and MacArthur has been robbed countless times, someone carjacked someone in the Burlington Coat Factory parking lot with a hypodermic needle as a weapon claiming to give them aids, need more? Look around the mall and see what kind of garbage hangs out there. The Lehigh Valley seems to welcome in all the miscreants from other areas like New York.

This area needs to lure in more educated folks who can help revitalize the economy by starting good businesses or perhaps moving their businesses here.

As for moving south, that is my plan. I'm moving my family to North Carolina once I get my house sold.

Just my .02.

That does make a lot sense as far as being "intimate." I never really looked at it that way-good choice of words.

I grew up outside of Philly and have lived in Orlando and Minneapolis, and it just seems like here it is worse. Perhaps it is the proximity. Still, I would think that for such a small area, the politicians would be more proactive about it.

I really do not like to point the finger at people from NY and NJ like a lot of small minded folks in the Valley do. But, the reality is that a lot of criminals have migrated here. The area law enforcement needs to get more with it and deal with the bad situations better. Then those who are troublemakers will leave, and others thinking of coming here will think twice about doing so. Otherwise, I personally do not care where you are from. Do your thing. I expect the same courtesy from my future neighbors when I make my true move.
