I already posted this in the sticky post, but thought this would be a better idea...
-Where you are working? hopefully transferring with whole foods from Phoenix.
-How much you are willing to spend on housing not more than 550 a month.. i work in retail
-How long of a commute you're willing to tolerate 30 min max, unless i find somewhere amazing.
-If you have kids: Private school or public school? no kids.. but looking to go to a community college myself then transfer to university
-What type of neighborhood environment you are looking for: small town feeling? small city excitement? suburbia delight? would love small town with a bit of excitement, but honestly, safe, clean, and affordable are more important.
-Community amenities important to you? good coffee shop and target? a nice town area within biking distance would be great.. Also wouldnt mind living around a few horse farms.
Eh, you're not likely to find $550 a month single bedroom apartment near Whole Foods, and plan on an hour commute due to traffic, although you could feasibly get around most of the interior of New Circle Road in half an hour on a bike.
I'm not saying you won't find something affordable within a twenty mile radius, but expect to compromise, whether it's on neighborbood, nearby amenities, or the surprising amount of time it takes to cover a short distance by car. Rent is seriously overpriced in Lexington - partly because of the college, but landlords take advantage of even the most marginal location in order to justify a higher rent.
Well, you're probably not moving to the north side or the west side, so don't worry about crime. Instead, avoid large apartment complexes and try to rent from an independent landlord. I've had some nightmare experiences trying to get maintenance from the larger property companies, particularly one with a monarchic-sounding name.... If the landlord asks if you're a student, don't bother renting. Even if you aren't a student, no landlord should discriminate solely on that basis. Otherwise, good luck.
You can do a search on here at the top of this site. This question has been asked a lot. Pretty much avoid the Northside closest to downtown, Georgetown Street area and the Winburn area particularly, Cardinal Valley area West of downtown and the Woodhill area on the Southside.
Also avoid the vairous apartments on Centre Parkway, on the south side: drive-by shootings lately, despite being surrounded by a nice neighborhood with single family houses and having a police station nearby. This area has really declined in recent years.
