I'm from the northeast and a house with all electric is usually not desirable, but I've noticed browsing the Lexington area listings that all electric seems to be a desirable option and to me it seems strange. What is the deal? Is natural gas expensive? Oil companies few and far between?

I was wondering this as well. I am also from the northeast (PA) and there all electric is horrible! LOL. I will tell you electric here is expensive! We used our electric heat very little at the beginning of the month (like 3 days) and our bill for 6 days was over $40. $40 was a high bill for ONE month back home!

I have no idea why, but some people seem to prefer all-electric. I'll be interested to hear why that might be. It isn't because electricity is so cheap...

Yes! Please everyone do tell! LOL one of the big "rental points" about our house is that it does have natural gas heat also... we like the "dual" option.

Yes, the dual feature is desirable. During the 2003 ice storm we were without power for eight days, but with the help of a portable generator and a battery backup we were able to power the thermostat and the water heater along with the sump pump to keep them both dry. Power was also available for some lights, the refrigerator and a TV.

We were one of the few who stayed in our homes on that street.

Electric heat is a LOT cheaper here than gas!!!

If you have an electric heat pump instead of a gas furnace, you're looking at HUGE savings in the winter. I mean H-U-G-E. Columbia Gas rapes Kentuckians

Definitely a selling point

It's because electric rates are highly variable from one state to the other depending on how it is made. Kentucky has always ranked as the cheapest electricity rates in the country (or at least top 5) because of coal. Gas is much more expensive locally relative to electricity.

It is great Although if Obama's anti-coal legislation passes, Kentucky is screwed

Very true. Although it appears his "cap and trade" is facing serious difficulties from people within his own party because of the serious economic hardship it would place on their states (w va especially) and the country.

If you're gonna cook with an electric stove you need to spend some dough on some high quality pots and pans that spread the heat around. Like All-Clads.
