There are lots of foreign communities. Check out the Brick Lane area for one of the more established Bangladesh/Pakistan/India communities. Racism - there's some but not very much, certainly less than much of the rest of the world.
Thanks! I don't want to instigate a fight, but someone told me that pakistanis are treated like second class citizens, and they do all the labor and the jobs that the english don't want. I have a hard time believing that but I don't know...
I have just returned from London and I found it to be a very welcoming city. Now, I understand, that in years past, there was a lot of racism against Middle Easterners (or foreigners in general) but, I don't think that is the case anymore. (I could be wrong). I think that it probably has to do with where in London you are. I was in a very diverse area and, by all appearances, everyone seemed to be working together and not having any kind of issue with anyone else. The hotel that I stayed at was apparently owned by Asian Indians.
Additionally, I did not see any kind of "different" treatment of anyone with my travels throughout the city. So, I think that you would be safe.
In my opinion, London is the ultimate city. The crime rates are low (in comparison to the USA) and everything is available. You can be posh or poor and just be yourself and that is just fine!
London is like a heaven on Earth. Wonderful places to see, It gathers the old and the modern(Last weekend I saw a documentary about St. Pancreas train station. Its architeture take us back to 19th century, but, down there runs the Eurostar, first symbol of high speed trains technology. Truly amazing.)
I lived in Tooting in the 90's. I once counted and found 42 Pakistani/Kashmiri Halal resturants withing a mile or less of my flat. I can't imagine you'd have any trouble fitting in the neighborhood. I never had any trouble there whatsoever.

I don't think i've ever seen a Pakistani labourer...seriously.
