I am surprised nobody has nominated Reading. Reading is nothing spectacular, but it's worthy of seeing for a day trip. Reading is only around 40 miles from London.

Oxford. Stunning city with fabulous architecture and wonderful gardens, Great world class museums like the Pitt-Rivers and the Ashmoleum. There are over 39 Colleges in Oxford , the best to visit would be Christ Church, Merton ( especially the Medieval Library) , New College, Magdelen College and others like Corpus Christi , Exeter , Jesus, University, Brasenose, Trinity, Wadham, Worcester, Teddy Hall ( St Edmund's).
Try your hand at Punting on the river which is an experience not to be missed. There are coaches every 10 minutes from London to Oxford and trains every half an hour I think.
Also the Botanic Gardens or just strolling the Christ Church meadows. The museums are still free, right? Explore Blackwells bookshop. Eat at The Big Bang on Walton Street.
