If you want history go to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, or try Chartwell (Churchills Home) maybe if you are into gardens Sissinghurst in Kent.

I recommend going to hike the Dover cliffs. The town isn't the most charming or historic but the cliffs are absolutely beautiful and unique.

How about Stratford-Upon-Avon for a day trip?
Worth it; I've been to the Globe and have a degree in English Lit.

Mooseketeer, do you really recommend Cambridge that highly! Now I have to make a decision.

I am surprised nobody has nominated Reading. Reading is nothing spectacular, but it's worthy of seeing for a day trip. Reading is only around 40 miles from London.

Try your hand at Punting on the river which is an experience not to be missed. There are coaches every 10 minutes from London to Oxford and trains every half an hour I think.

Also the Botanic Gardens or just strolling the Christ Church meadows. The museums are still free, right? Explore Blackwells bookshop. Eat at The Big Bang on Walton Street.
