Boris Johnson has won the race to become the next mayor of London - ending Ken Livingstone's eight-year reign at City Hall. The Conservative candidate won with 1,168,738 first and second preference votes, compared with Mr Livingstone's 1,028,966 on a record turnout of 45%.
The P.C. Champagne Socialists no doubt spit on the ground he walks on, but he does seem to have a universal appeal to the rank and file of ordinary Brits on either side of politics. Eccentric? Yes... Straight talking [engaging mouth before brain at times] ? Most certainly...He harks back to the old political traditions in this country, and there I think you will find the secret of his appeal. The tipping point for P.C. may have been reached and the backlash is beginning. You only have to look at the seats gained by the BNP to suspect that. I for one would rather have a hundred like Boris than see one BNP councillor..
He certainly wouldn`t have gone as far as he has if he was the complete bufoon the left wing press portray him as. On reading the following quotes I have to admit he gives me more smiles than frowns. But I will also admit they do bring on the odd "ouch"...
Labour voters wishing to make a protest vote have always chosen to side with the Lib/Dems. So why on this occasion did the Lib/Dem share of the vote [ in Council election results] remain static whilst the Tory vote went through the roof?? Any self respecting Labour supporter would rather cut off his arm than vote Tory. So why did they vote Tory in their droves this time? Could it be that certain Tory policies, not just on the economy, were seen to be more sensible than NEW Labour?
Another thing, I suspect, is that if Ken had stood as an Independant the result may have been closer...

It is a tad embrassing that we have just elected Boris as Mayor of Britain's most important city, although (fortunately) his power is somewhat limited in comparison to other major world cities.
Whilst Boris doesn't adhere to PC rules, this is somewhat respected and taken as 'honesty'!?? He has also made countless remarks about homosexuality, and Africans, that are unaccepteable. Have we elected a competent Mayor, or an entertaining buffoon that will fill the Daily Mail editorials for the next 12 months?
Will he be a better Mayor than Ken? Maybe, maybe not, but the choice on offer wasn't good. When you look at the scrutiny and intensity that the US politicians go through, Boris wouldn't have made it to Henley!

Have to agree about it hardly being a great choice between the obvious three. It may as well have read " Groucho, Harpo or Zeppo"..
Good for him. He has great hair. And now I don't have to deal with the louts drinking 3-litre bottles of Strongbow on the Tube.
i always thought drinking on public transport was illegal...i had no idea there was no law banning it. way to go Boris.
