The 1500 gallon heating oil tank was a regulated tank. These tanks required periodic testing and registration / renewal fees. You probably will have to pay the back fees. Also since it was a regulated tank you must follow the protocol for closure of a regulated tank. I am curious why when people have questions regarding an underground tank why they do not go to the WEB and contact companies like mine that will give you free advice as to what to do in these situations. As I have stated in other answers, for some reason people on Long Island try to ignore the underground tank on their property whereas the surrounding areas are very aware of the potential liabilities associated with these tanks. You should not totally rely on the Home Inspector to provide you with the issues involving underground tanks, contact a tank testing company for proper guidance.
