Wyandanch has over 10,000 people and they're surviving. Millions of people live in such communities and they're fine.

Like I said earlier, most people won't bother you unless you bother them. The vast majority of victims of violent crime were involved with the perpetrator.

I mean, Wyandanch may not be the most ideal location but with an annual salary of 50k you can make it work.

Well, you CAN make it (I know plenty of people who do), although it'd be a crunch. And the OP did mention big bonuses.
The big issues here are finding an area that's acceptable AND getting a mortgage approval from a lender with that income; but we don't have all the details...

On the other hand, rentals with a dog make things more difficult as well... Not an easy situation.

Hmmm, there's actually what seems like a decent house in Medford for well under $100K. If cwlawrence is ok with the area, it could be affordable!

It has a large backyard and is on a dead end street, but probably needs new appliances and certainly fixing up, but it's got a basement and three full bathrooms--even great as an investment (rental property).

Could that house be in the part of Gordon Heights that has a "Medford, NY 11763" mailing address?

OP... the bonus is not fixed, you have to think about it.
$50K = bottom of the ladder on LI where average household income is over $80-90K.
You might find a house and scramble to move in.... but it will be tough to pay the plumbers, electricians, handy men etc who you will be calling after buying a foreclosed house or a TLC house.
Do you even have any idea about cost of living ? LI has one of the highest in the nation in major categories like groceries, healthcare, transportation, taxes etc.... Oh and don't you ignore your pets.... make sure you pay good $$$ for their upkeep too.
Sorry to paint a bleak picture, but if my understanding of your experience living on LI is correct, then you will thank me later.

I VERY strongly suggest you rent, and more importantly... do not burn your bridges with past employers so that its easy to exit the island if you need to !!

P.S: Are you married ? I see you mentioned infant.... if not, then daycare is going to cost you atleast $1000-1500 per month.

Perhaps crunchy liberals are entitled to some type of government bail-out/stimuli to live in less than desirable areas of semi-affluent suburbs, like Long Island, to provide some diversity.

you guys are so unfair. If they are crunchy and liberal, they can simply apologize for all the criminals in the areas in which they can buy. Nature vs. nurture baby!
