Yearly oil usage on Long Island (Hope: renting, house, water heater)

I'm using about 750 gallons of oil a year for a 1 1/2 story cape (1/2 story is finished attic: house built in 1940's) on Long Island. (This year will be more) I have a relatively new oil burner (5 years old) and no separate hot water heater. 4 of my 14 windows (on 1st and 2nd floor) have been replaced. Looking to find out how I can save more $ and cost efficient ways to reduce heating costs. What is your yearly usage of oil and what is your home like? If you have gas, what is your yearly gas cost and what type of home? If you have an oil burner converted to gas (using same boiler) what is your experience?
We spend about $2500+ a year in home heating oil on a 3 bedroom split level (aprox 1800 sq feet). Our burner is over 20 years old and we have a small hot water heater. Our house in not vinyl sided and we still have some old aluminum windows.
We are renting this house and are looking to buy a house heated by gas instead of oil.
Probably spending 1200-ish a year on oil, 4 bed 1950's cape. Newer burner. Not too bad.
Neighbor has the same exact house, but gas, he says he's at somewhere around 2k since November.
Other than the convenience, he regrets the switch. He says NatGrid is killing him, and his place is all pimped with new windows, doors, siding, etc...His gas bills were 4 or 5 hundred a month. YIKES!
2300 sq feet, 23 yr old house, new burner (just motor piece), oil for the water too, 3 zone heating systen with programable thermostat, and someone home pretty home all day & night
get a fireplace with a insert ...my house was 75 degrees all winter when the fireplace was at its best heating ..I also cut and split my own wood ..I use about 750 gallons of oil every 15-16 months ,COD delivery ...2700 sq. ft house with catherdal ceilings up stairs ...I do have my indirect hot water heater works off the burner which is oil .... Oil co.'s hate me ......

Your neighbor must have his house at 75% I am a 3200 sque foot home with somone home all day and 9 people in my home and you can feel the cold on my walls because the house is not properly insulated and my bill for the winter was just over $400 this is with a new baby and my wife ket the temp above 73%. I love the fact that I switched and I cannot wait to switch my stoves and dryer. With the money you save not buying from the cooks (the oil companies) and LIPA there is no way you cannot come out ahead.
The one thing about oil is you have the freedom to shop around. With gas, they gotcha.
I remember when gas was much more than oil, and it will be again at some point. That's just how the market works with this crap.
Oil is more efficient than gas with a properly tuned burner. Either fuel is useless with a poorly insulated home.
But, oil is a pain in the ass to deal with sometimes, it requires more maintenance than a gas burner to gain the optimum efficiency. Gas is almost trouble free.
Bottom line, they both have pro's/con's.
Both homes I've owned had oil, just a coincidence.
Would I complain if I had gas? nope. Do I care either way? nope.
