That contract is far and away the worst I have ever seen, the average COLA is 3.5 % and each step adds on another 4.7% for 10 years, and the district pays the entire cost of health and dental for through 2015.

I have to wonder who the districts negotiator was because this borders on criminal. Someone wshould ask the BOE representative, Edward Freudenberg why he signed the contract? If you look at the pay scale for 2015 the top step will be around $150K for just a masrters and the average teacher will be well over $100K.

The superintendent is right the 9% increase this year is inaccurate, it’s only around 8.2% and with 28 steps in each ladder who wouldn’t get a step increase?

I just don’t see how that district will survive, who would buy a home there with those tax increases coming.

At some point you would think there would be infighting among the union members...right?

I mean, how do you sit there knowing you're about to lose your job because certain union members (and/or union leadership) is unwilling to budge on raises and step increases?

To the Op...Islip and Central Islip are two completely different towns/hamlets/etc.

Its ashame that these unions would sell out on the teachers who will lose their jobs while other collect pay raises.

The raise part is strange considering the last post with a link to the story of the budget woes of the Central Islip School District:

So if they are in such dire straits, where are they getting the MONEY for the large raises? They are actually going to raise taxes on people for this handout?

From the Newsday story cited by the OP:

The average Central Islip teacher makes about $100,000, Carr said. State data show the median salary in the school district falls in the middle of the Island's 124 districts. The top bracket is higher paid than all but 10 districts. This year, teacher salaries top off at $150,918. In 2015, when the contract ends, the cap will be $173,848.

Don't forget what the pensions will be on those kind of salaries that that taxpayers are saddled with for life, Newsday!

And answering my own question:

The $176-million budget adopted earlier this week by the board of education calls for a 6.57 percent tax increase that would raise the average homeowner's bill by $500.

ONLY around $500 a year more for the homeowners! A mere bag of shells.
