Hi

Just curious, I plan to buy a ranch about 1100 sq feet. Does that qualified as zone 1?

I am just budgeting how much money I will spend. I plan to live in this house for 12 years (easy to understand why 12 years).

Would it be worth it to convert or just stay in oil?

thanks.

The "Zones" that are being referred to means the number of different heating zones in the house. For example: if your house has a 2 thermostats, one for upstairs and one for downstairs you would then have 2 zones.

Basically the number of thermostats in the house equals the number of zones.

There are certain situations where this is not always true but that's not really pertinent to your question.

As far as converting it really comes down to budget. I can tell you that personally my fuel bill with gas is around $1400 per year and that's for heating and hot water. This includes washing machine, dishwasher and a heated 2 car garage. A typical 275 gallon oil tank would cost around $950 to fill completely at some of today's rates. If you go through say 4 tanks of oil per year you would be looking at say $4000 in total (talking round numbers)

You would need to weigh your cost of equipment and installation vs how many years it would take to recoup your investment.

You may also want to consider how the newer gas heating system will help the resale value of the home.

thanks oldguycar for the info.

I think gas would be the way to go even for 12 years.
