South of Mason-Dixon, even in Maryland, New Yorkers are usually considered more an infestation than a migration.

I don't think the reputation is entirely justified, as when Southerners visit New York City, they tend to get a bang out of the abrasiveness. When you're here, you expect it as part of the culture.

It's when people from New York go elsewhere and expect everyone else to change to suit them or complain in a vocal and typically New York style about the local ways that it becomes a problem. ("Oh, moy GAWD, it's so SLOW!") Unfortunately, it happens enough that sometimes all it takes to get an unfairly cold welcome is for one to open one's yap, er, mouth.
no it doesn't. you've seen My Cousin Vinny too many times.

I lived down South. I've seen it happen all too often. But your response is a perfect example of the "New Yawk Additude." Thanks for proving my point.

Allow me to present some oral histories evidencing the North Shore dialect.

Answering The Call: The history of the Port Washington Fire Department

You can hear the almost "Teddy Roosevelt" dialect that's evident in Port Washington/Oyster Bay in some of the older male's histories.

Too funny!
I spent part of my childhood on The Guyland (Massapequa aka 'matzoh/pizza') but grew up in Eastchester. The kids in our family had slight accents growing up which got stronger as more peeps from BBQ (Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens) moved in. I haven't lived in NY for 35 years. My accent is pretty much gone. When I go home to visit, however, which is about once a year, the accent comes back. The ear just picks it up. My kids make fun of me (No, Mom, we aren't going to get cawfee, wawk the dawg, eat aaahranges or go to Flaaarida).
Living here in Oregon (Aaarah-gone) every now and then someone will ask if I'm from New Jersey. Now, what did I do to deserve that?! JUST KIDDING!

It's been a constant battle to lose the NY/LI accent.
