I was reading another thread about school kids' food options and couldn't believe a school wouldn't let parents send in food with their kids. As one poster said, how did we ever survive with all those kids bringing in their own snacks in the past?
Anyway, that's not the point of this post. That thread made me think of other things that have changed and one that I noticed is the removal of old playgrounds.
Does anyone remember the huge wooden playground at Abbey Lane Elementary School in Levittown? If I remember correctly, there had been a playground, people burned it down, and the community got together and built a new one. It was great being a kid and getting to play on it - there was a castle with a wide slide on one side and a fireman's pole on the other, a twisty slide on the other side of the park, little 'hidden' rooms throughout, there was a ring of tires that you could crawl through (they were like half in the ground so the piece sticking out was like a semi-circle) and some of them were big enough to sit inside (those big ones always smelled like urine inside), another area of tires I can't really describe, monkey bars, swings, bridges, just a great playground and not the kind you would expect a random elementary school to have (I always wondered if kids from the other district elementary schools were jealous).
I also remember a big wooden playground at Lido Beach. I don't remember as much about it, just playing tag there and there being a bridge and big windows cut into the wood.
I guess these days it's a liability issue
