Mandatory evacuation order in effect for Nassau storm surge areas
(10/28/12) WOODBURY - Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano has ordered a mandatory evacuation for Nassau storm surge areas. The areas include south of Sunrise Highway from the Queens line to Rockville Centre, and south of Merrick Road, from Rockville Centre to the Nassau-Suffolk border.
Low-lying areas, defined as 15 feet above sea level or less, are also included in the evacuation order.
Shelters are currently open at Nassau Community College, Levittown Memorial High School, Locust Valley High School and SUNY Old Westbury.
All county parks, marinas and senior centers will close tonight at 5 p.m.
The county has also activated its non-emergency hotline, 1-888-684-4274.
Mandatory? so if i don't leave 2 cops are going to come to my house and taze me?
as in nobody's coming for you should anything happen. I just saw on the news a dad and his son went surfing in NJ and promptly got swept out about 300 yards. Coast Guard couldn't get him but a sport-fishing boat was able to. Lucky... and stupid, for risking others' lives. Dad-of-the-year award winner right there too.
I heard on news 12 to call a phone number for nassau non-emergency for questions about shelters for people that had pets, and I got what I think what sounded was a fax number, how surprising!!! PS - anyone know that info?
Lots of people asking what happens if you do not evacuate when under a mandatory order. In short, nothing happens legally.
But, you will not get a response from 911 if you need it. Emergency responders are unable to respond to a call when winds are over 55mph, and they cannot get to you in deep flood waters. The chances for power lines to come down and cause a fire or electrocute you are greater, and fire departments cannot respond.
Look I evacuated, I'm not one of the stupid ones... BUT i evacuated for Irene and nothing happened and it was like "I evacuated for THIS??". I think a lot of ppl are hesitant this time as Irene turned out to really be nothing like they said it would be.
My best friend knows someone who lives in Lindenhurst by the canal, she was told to evacuate and she said she's staying put. My advice is if you decide to stay despite mandatory evacuations then you do it at your own risk. Don't expect 911 to respond quickly if anything should happen to you because you were told what to do.

Err on the side of caution, folks. This is a disasterous storm. It will rain, there will be wind, but it is the STORM SURGE/FLOODING that does the damage. I live on an island and no way would I try to outlast this storm at home if it were bearing down in my area.
Remember photos of Katrina...people were stranded for days, no power; fights over water, food, gas. ER personnel might not be able to get to you in an emergency.
And don't forget your PETS, they depend on YOU. __________________________________________________ _______________________________________ Good luck and keep safe~
