Or at least give us another option for electric from another source. Isn't it illegal to only have one company to choose from anyways?
It's called a monopoly and this is one of the reasons our bills are so high, we can't just go to another company to get our electric we are stuck with only LIPA. And that sucks for us.
levittown here, still now power. I'm freezing and my supply of firewood is dwindling away rapidly. I have a bunch of fresh logs, but those don't burn nearly as well as the seasoned stuff i had.
Have two small children, oldest is a little over 3, and both are miserable.
I guess LIPA or someone in my parents development did not know what they were talking about when they said they would not be working on the pipes beign eaten by sea water until after Christmas...b/c my parents just got their power back. That's strange! Goes to show nobody really knows what's going on with LIPA. It's insane! I blame LIPA for lack of communication with their customers. I'm just happy my parents community got back their power and the elderly won't freeze. I hope everyone who does not have power back on yet, gets it back quickly. Good luck to all.

All power companies are monopolies... it's called a natural monopoly. You can't exactly have 4 sets of power lines and then choose providers.
As the Newsday article points out, LIPA's problem is that it is a private company with non-existent oversight.

In NYC where you can choose a different electric/gas company to be your provider, they still go thru ConEds lines. The prices for gas/electric even thru these providers are still high.
So even if you have a situation that is similar on LI, you still would have only one company in charge of the infrastructure.

That's available on LI too. Some of those providers are major ripoffs and treat their customers horribly. I looked at the website of one and NOWHERE would it even state what its rates are. There's one that if you are late on payment by 1 day they shut off your electricity, then take their time putting it back on, and charge you a hideous surcharge on all future service.
Unfortunately it is not just an inept management that is LIPA's problem. I had many out of state crews in my area. Everyone one of them commented on how lazy the LIPA workers were and how stupid their plan of needing 3 different crews to actually complete the job was. In their area 1 crew did it all....trimmed the tree, removed wire from tree, and reconnected wire to house.
Union regs helped cause the slow response time.

This is not entirely true. In theory, it seems like sound logic. What those out of towners don't realize is that their workload is much less than what we have here. So is their customer base, and therefore, their revenue. So it makes practical sense to have one crew perform all those functions.
The training, skill set, mental capacity and pay scale of a tree trimmer is different than that of a lineman. The workload here makes it impractical for a lineman to waste his valuable time cutting trees when he should be following the tree trimmers in a coordinated sequence to finish the jobs.
The REAL problem is there are way too many people working here with nothing to do, because upper management has no clue wtf is going on out there. They have/had no plan of attack. Those guys from out of town are right in that they probably could have completed the jobs they were given on their own, but that's only because the tremendous amount of work is not being coordinated to the point where every single lineman and tree trimmer is swamped. With the manpower that's here and a solid plan, this could have been mostly done in a week, and most of these guys could be somewhere else where they are needed more. They're here now as a ridiculous show of all hands on deck so LIPA can dupe the public into believing they're doing all they can. We see how that's working out....
