I'm wondering if anyone on this fine forum has gotten recent estimates from a reputable, possibly national, moving company to move their stuff from LI to points south or west. Given the cost of fuel and labor on LI, I'm guessing it could take a pile of cash to hire movers. So in the name of cushioning the sticker shock, please share the numbers you all are hearing.

And to those of you who are leaving the Island soon, Godspeed.

We'll be in contract on our house this week and are moving to points south. We have gotten rid of so much in preparation for moving over the past 8 months that I am now thinking we'll rent a 26' truck and move everything ourselves. I was initially considering using ABF to let them do the driving - while taking care of the loading/unloading. Below are some links that might be of use to you.

Congratulations on leaving the Island - I wish you the best of luck!

We used Bay Shore Moving and Storage, the local affiliate of Allied. THey were great. They also moved my mom and my sister with absolutely no issues. They came in $300 below estimate - it was just about $3000 for our 3BR 2BA house. Will write more later if you have additional questions.

Sorry - had to leave before -

you should get three estimates. One thing you should ask for is about boxing your mattresses. Bay Shore included that in their estimate, the other 2 didn't. Silly not to, because you can't NOT crate them, the springs will pop.

We packed the house ourselves. The movers dismantled our furniture and packed that stuff up. If I were to do it again, I would dismantle as much of the furniture as I could - like beds. Of course, there are a million things to do and think about on move day so that may not have been entirely feasible but I guess we could have slept on the mattresses for just one night. Tough with kids though - not sure you have that to deal with but it was hard enough on them seeing everything packed up, etc!

As far as costs - remember when you sell your house you will get back the overage from escrow account a few weeks or maybe a month later. You'll also get money back when you send your NY plates back etc if you recently re-registered your cars....there were other checks that dribbed and drabbed in, can't remember them all but it's fun getting money in the mail at your new home

I'll certainly be poking my head into CD LI once in a while. I wish YOU good luck in making your decision. It's a BIG country - don't allow those with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo to discourage you. If you try someplace else and don't like it - you can always move back.

We went full service Mayflower affiliate... the big licensed ones will do it by weight. 4 bed 2 story with a garage was $8k and change to south charlotte. They load you and then roll onto the scales to confirm their estimate. I will say they're good at estimating - they were within a couple hundred dollars of the quote. We just about filled one of those big trucks everyone sees around - thinking back we should have purged more because we just ended up purging down here renting while we waited for the house to be built.

Nobody likes moving and we went full service because I dreaded doing it by myself long distance. It was great not having to beg family and friends for help... we just packed boxes ourselves and the movers did everything from dismantle to put everything back together on the other end. But it was at a premium price.

We did pods last year. It suited us great as we didn't have the pressure of having everything packed. We had 4 pods and started in April. By July we were in our new house and had all 4 pods emptied. I think it cost around 4k but for us it was worth it. Luckily our kids are very good and helped pack and unpack. We did get help to unpack the first one as it had appliances etc. they bill monthly so we basically had a month to unpack each one.
