Dont know about times and what not...all I know is I head west everyday around 5:15 and its backed up. Sometimes I see the line clear down by the Bay Shore mall. Everyone knows the service road trick. It looks like they be making the exit ramp off of Southern State Pky to Sunrise-East bound 2 lanes.
If traveling on Sunrise Hwy through the Connetquot Park merge then I would stay west of that bottle neck!! That can add 15 mins to your commute.

Its never that backed up unless there is an accident.
Sayville to Good Sam in West Islip on Montauk HW 15 miles 30 minutes.Stony Brook Hospital from Sayville 30 minutes Montauk to Nicolls. This is at 8.30 am.I live in Sayville and have done it thousands of times
east northport - you can hop right on the sag/sunken meadow and get to west islip...easy and direct
I avoid the Sag in heavy rains -- a few times last summer alone it flooded and was closed. We were detoured off the psych hospital exit and had to get turned around back up to the LIE. Plus, you get the back up for Pine Aire Dr.
Those would be the only two downsides I see for an East Northport WI commute.
E Northport -- Stony Brook is another story. It takes 30 minutes to get from Stony Brook LIRR to 25A and Church St/Indian Head Rd in Kings Park; one would have to tack on more time for East Northport, unless they were close to 25 and the NSP.
Thank you all for pitching in with the great information. Now I need to digest all of that. I have been commuting from Mineola to SB for the last three years via Northern state, 347 or 495, Nicolls. I got used to it, so 347 is no big deal for me. I can deal with bad traffic, but want to make sure that my wife faces less of that.
Any suggestions on how to go about looking for a house for rental in a more effective and efficient way apart from looking at trulia, zillow, Newsday?

www.mlsli.com - mostly for buying, but they have a rental search too

You know the typical ways to get to SB. Residents take a back way which beats dealing with 347.
The OP also has to get to Stony Brook. Have fun on 347
25A is easier for getting to SB
